Bradley Students Reach out to Local Elderly

On April 21, a group of Bradley students held a seminar to help local seniors with cyber security. Stuart Fisher, a member of the group, has learned quite a bit about public relations and event planning along the way.

Fisher and his group teamed up with Web Tech Services of East Peoria and RSVP (retired senior volunteer program) of Peoria to plan and facilitate the event. This seminar helped teach seniors how to protect themselves from being exploited technologically.

The seminar was held at the Peoria Public Library’ RiverWest Branch. Web Tech Services owner Tammy Finch led the seminar, with the help of youth volunteers.

The seminar covered email and text message scams, basic prevention of identity theft, and several other topics. The goal was to equip the senior citizens of Peoria with the knowledge to keep them safe in this new technological age.

Fisher has learned a lot from the project and feels it will greatly benefit him after graduation.

“I defiantly think it helps you prepare to be professional, and gives you a great taste of what the real world is like,” Fisher said.

Fisher and his group created press releases and led communication between Web Tech and RSVP. They mastered effective communication throughout the project’s duration.

Fisher reflected on how successful the project was and how it has changed him as a public relations student.

“Probably basic confidence in myself. I just remember previous seniors, all you hear is senior project and you kind of get this idea that it’s something big and it’s something terrible,” Fisher said. “For the most part I’ve conquered it. I just feel like I can do anything.”
