Local non-for-profit RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) partnered with Web Tech Services in East Peoria to bring a free cyber security seminar to Peoria area senior citizens on Thursday. It was held at Peoria Public Library’s RiverWest branch, bringing information to a full room of senior citizens.
The seminar, led by Web Tech owner, Tammy Finch, covered current email and text message scams to virus protection, as well as basic preventative measures against identity theft. It also featured a presentation by Ashley Kinne, Peoria coordinator for RSVP. Numerous youth volunteers also offered support in guiding and teaching seniors.
The event marked the launching of the “Connect & Protect” web portal containing all information presented at the seminar. The web portal was created for senior citizens to use as a resource to learn more about Internet safety, as well as how to connect with Peoria area businesses and organizations. The web portal is designed to keep growing in order to stay relevant with current Internet scams and meet the needs of senior citizens. The web portal can be accessed at www.seniorcybersecurity.com.
