Filipino-American Society of Central Illinois (FASCI) To Showcase Aspects of Philippine Culture at Event
As an increasing number of ethnic groups converged in Central Illinois, the Civic Center Authority’s Cultural Diversity Committee created WorldFest to celebrate the diverse nationalities in the area. The annual event, coming up on September 10th, is being held in Conjunction with Youth Doing the Right Thing. It features live entertainment, wonderful ethnic food, cultural displays, a raffle, and unique items for sale at world market booths.
The opening ceremony includes a parade of flags, with local dignitaries presiding. There will be local representation from many cultures, including Chinese American, American Indian, Indo-American, Irish American, Italian American, German American, Croatian American, Korean American, Lebanese American, Hispanic American, and Filipino-American.
For nearly ten years, the Philippines will be represented by the Filipino-American Society of Central Illinois (FASCI) at WorldFest. Guests at the FASCI booths will be treated to exciting exhibits showcasing aspects of Filipino culture. Among them are food products, native crafts made of bamboo, seashells and wood carvings, including a “Bahay Kubo” (nipa hut). Some traditional costumes will also be on display.
And in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birthday of the Philippine National Hero – Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal – FASCI will feature a poster display highlighting his life, writings, and accomplishments.
A fashion show of the diverse Filipino costumes and a performance of several folk dances will cap the FASCI presentation at the event.
