Continuing her efforts to promote fiscal responsibility and lead by example, state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria) will be returning her per diem from this week’s special session of the General Assembly back to the state.
“Lawmakers are going back to Springfield because there is still work to do and we shouldn’t be incurring more costs while not completing the tasks we are given,” Gordon-Booth said. “Our schools and social service agencies are doing a tremendous job providing quality services while facing significant cuts in state funding, which is why I am giving back my per diem. This is a step in the right direction.”
After the legislative session for the year has concluded, lawmakers may be asked to come back to Springfield to address unfinished business or new issues that have arisen. Earlier this month, Governor Pat Quinn called a special session of the General Assembly, asking lawmakers to continue working on a solution to the state’s pension crisis. Each time legislators travel to Springfield for a special session costs taxpayers approximately $40,000 per day.
“By returning my per diem I hope to be leading by example,” Gordon-Booth said. “I will continue pushing for fiscally responsible measures that protect our residents and get the state back on the right track.”
