Everyone needs a break. If you are living with a senior and are the primary caregiver, remember to take care of yourself. It’s wonderful that you are providing the means for your loved one to stay at home, but caregiving is demanding — and it’s normal to need a break. Respite care provides caregivers a temporary rest, while the senior being cared for continues to receive the needed level of care in a safe environment. Actually, using respite services can support and perhaps strengthen your ability to be a caregiver. And it isn’t uncommon for the senior to enjoy a change of companionship and assistance, too.\

Respite care will allow you a chance to spend time with friends and family, or just relax with a quiet lunch, or have a treat at a coffee shop. It’ll give you time to take care of errands such as shopping, getting the car serviced, seeing the dentist or a doctor. And you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your loved one is spending time with a caring individual.

Respite care is available in a variety of ways and settings. The most common is in your home with services ranging from simple companion services, to providing assistance with daily activities, to help with medication and other medical services. Adult day centers offer a safe environment with staff to lead planned activities, provide meals, and in some cases transportation to and from the center. For an extended break or vacation, some skilled nursing homes and assisted living homes will take a senior for an overnight stay, or a few days, even a week or two.

Sometimes an emergency or an unexpected trip can create a need for immediate respite services. It’s a good idea to engage providers in a non-emergency situation, so you’re prepared if a sudden need arises.

Seeking help does not make you a failure. Remember that respite services benefit both you and the person you’re caring for.
