A referendum to dissolve West Peoria Township will be on the Nov. 3 ballot. Having performed the due diligence of weighing the costs and benefits for the citizens of West Peoria, the Township board decided dissolving the Township was in the best interests of the citizens. The City of West Peoria will assume the responsibility of processing General Assistance Grants to needy residents who meet the criteria for assistance with rent, utility bills, food and transportation resulting in savings for all West Peoria taxpayers. All current property taxes and township assets will be deferred to the City of West Peoria. The question on the ballot will read: “Shall the township of West Peoria cease?” This is a “yes” or “no” question.

Another important referendum that appears on the ballot is to allow Peoria County to sell Heddington Oaks which has been closed for several months. Heddington Oaks is the county’s long-term care facility. Taxpayer approval is needed to allow Peoria County to sell the facility. It has proven too expensive for the county to maintain. If citizens vote “yes” to sell the facility, it will make certain this very marketable property does not remain vacant.

This November issue of Community Word has been delivered prior to the Nov. 3 election to various businesses throughout the county. Polling places include the City Garage and the Franciscan Center.

Scout Troop 11 is again selling holiday wreaths and butter braids as a fundraiser this season. The sale ends Nov. 5. For more information, contact Robert DeSutter, 369-8078. Scouting provides a huge amount of opportunities for young people and their families.

The second annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is planned for 6:30 p.m. outside City Hall on Monday, Nov. 30. This officially kicks off the West Peoria holiday season.

The 2020 Residents’ Association Beauty Award was presented to Maria Azcorra for the tremendous work she has done at her home at 1925 W. Barker.

Neighborhood Watch programs are anticipating starting again in November.
