I am starting this column with caution about streets for snow conditions this winter. All West Peoria streets are snow routes and parking on them is prohibited when there are 2 inches or more of snow. The process begins with warnings that snow
of 2 or more inches is predicted. Check with Facebook or the Simplicity app if you are uncertain. All obstructing vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed at the owner’s expense.
For more extensive details, check the West Peoria website.
SECURITY
Also keep your vehicles locked when it is unoccupied. Stolen cars have been a serious issue in the county.
City Council voted to increase police protection under a new contract to 24/7. Sen. Dave Koehler got a state grant for West Peoria to cover cost so it does not come out of residents taxes. This is an improvement for us all.
METER SWEEP
Check your outdoor meters to make sure they are all functioning properly. Outdoor gas, electric and water meters all need to be kept clear of debris. Sweep them with a broom to clear them.
NEW THINGS
The year 2023 will see many changes for West Peoria, including on sidewalks and streets to make it safer and easier to get around. The introduction of Young Minds hosted by Unity Point to the Heddington Oaks facility will be increased — and better — facilities for youth. A portion of St. Francis is moving the Regional Learning Center from Wildlife Prairie Park to offer some of its programs at the Franciscan Center. Continuing reopening of some pandemic-closed businesses will change streetscapes thus improving offerings in our City.
ON SCHEDULE
City Hall will be closed Jan. 2 to start the year. The West Peoria Residents Association has a meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 19 in City Hall. Jan. 11 is on the schedule for a Neighborhood Watch meeting at 6 p.m. in City Hall. The Neighborhood Watch has added April Silver to co-coordinate with Maggie Moore on this year’s agenda. There is a new treasurer for the Resident’s Association, Emily Waite. To call to register for 2023, phone (208) 850-6934.
