ART
• ArtsPartners of Central Illinois announced the winning artists and their works for the 2023 Sky Art Peoria program, an initiative supported by Adams Outdoor Advertising, which mounted 48×14-foot reproductions of the works on five billboards throughout Greater Peoria for one year starting in July.
The Sky Art Peoria jury, made up of arts, business and community leaders, judged the artwork according to artistic and technical merits, and visual appeal.
The adult division’s winners include Kristina Bohan (“Driftin”), Oksana Greer (“Fruits Sur la Plage”), Knyame Maison (“Boundary of Sea and Land”) and Patricia Whalen Keck (“The Pedestrian”).
Two local artists younger than 18 were selected in the student division: Claire Cox (“Portrait of Sunlight”) and Jesus Reyes (“La Fille Dans L’eau”).
CINEMA
• Another branch of Hollywood’s DC’s TV/film universe, “Blue Beetle,” is scheduled to open in moviehouses Aug. 18. Starring Xolo Mariduena (from “Cobra Kai”), it’s an origin story about a youngster having an alien scarab attach itself to him, giving the teen shape-shifting armor, various weapons, and the power to control technology and absorb energy to convert to blasts. Susan Sarandon and George Lopez are featured.
MUSIC
• The Peoria Municipal Band wraps up summer with four concerts: Aug. 2 in the Warehouse District, Aug. 6 at Glen Oak Park, Aug. 9 in the Warehouse District, and Aug. 13 at Glen Oak Park.
• Continuing each Friday and Saturday starting Aug. 4, the Water Street Block Party will feature music ranging from Dexter O’Neal to Jonny Quest, performing near the Bearded Owl and Kelleher’s.
• The Peoria Civic Center Arena will host Mudvayne’s “Psychotherapy Sessions” on Aug. 9, with special guests Butcher Babies, Coal Chamber, Gwar, and Nonpoint.
• The Peoria Park District is presenting the indie/alt-rock/Americana recording artists Lone Bellow, with special guest Devon Gilfillian at Lakeview Park on Aug. 18.
• Erin Feis — the Peoria Irish Fest — Aug. 25-27 will feature the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Shane Hennessy, the Byrne Brothers, Ryan Young and more, all playing around the CEFCU Center Stage on the Riverfront.
STREAMING
• The third season of “Only Murders in the Building” returns to Hulu Aug. 8, with Meryl Streep joining Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez in the mystery/comedy — this time investigating a murder not in their apartment complex.
THEATER
• Corn Stock Theatre ends its 70th season with “Titanic” Aug. 4-12, and “Dirty Rotten Scoundels” Aug. 25 – Sept. 2.
TV
• The first Republican debate for the 2024 presidential campaign will air on Fox on Aug. 23, and it’s unclear which candidates will participate. However, Fox said network anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will moderate the show, telecast live from Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, where the GOP National Convention will be held.
