May promises to be a busy and meaningful month in West Peoria, filled with opportunities to connect with neighbors, support local initiatives, and honor those who have served our country.
As we prepare for these events, it’s impossible not to reflect on the recent death of Sharon McBride. Her dedication to West Peoria was unwavering, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Sharon’s legacy is woven into the fabric of West Peoria. She was instrumental in establishing Cub Scout Pack 11 and Boy Scout Troop 11, which continue to foster leadership and character in young people. Her passion for community spilled over into her role as the driving force behind the West Peoria Fourth of July Parade and Flag-Raising Ceremony, the longest-running Independence Day Parade.
For more than three decades, Sharon served as the West Peoria News columnist for The Community Word, keeping residents informed and connected through her writing. Her contributions extended to serving as a West Peoria Township Trustee, West Peoria Zoning Board member, and a dedicated advocate for the Western Avenue Greenway Committee.
Sharon’s tireless commitment wasn’t limited to West Peoria. She served for more than 27 years on the CityLink Transit Board and received national recognition in 2020 as the APTA Outstanding Public Transportation Board Member.
Sharon was a warm-hearted individual known for her dry wit and genuine connection with everyone she met. Her absence will be deeply felt, especially during events she championed, like the Memorial Day Service and the Fourth of July Parade.
CARRYING THE TORCH FORWARD: As we move forward, let’s carry the torch Sharon ignited. Show your support by attending the upcoming gatherings — the city-wide yard sale, the native plant sale, the State of the City Address, and the Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. May 25th. By participating in these events, we honor Sharon’s legacy and celebrate West Peoria’s community spirit.
BARGAINS GALORE AND NATIVE PLANT POWER: Kick things off with the city-wide yard sale from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 11th. Take advantage of this chance to unearth hidden treasures or declutter your space. In the event of a rainout, a backup date is set for Saturday, May 18.
Also, on May 11, head to Haddad’s from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for the fifth annual Native Plant Sale. More than 60 species of locally grown native plants will be available for purchase, offering the chance to beautify your garden while supporting the Friends of Rocky Glen.
A LOOK BACK AND FORWARD: Mark your calendars for the annual State of the City Address at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16th at West Peoria City Hall. Mayor James Dillon, City Administrator Kinga Krider, West Peoria Fire Chief Terry Schadt, and John Walker, West Peoria Lighting District President, will review accomplishments in 2023 and outline the plans for 2024.
