Recent storms may have highlighted some damage, but they’ve also served as a powerful reminder of the irreplaceable role of trees in our community. These silent guardians, like the majestic oak in St. Mary’s cemetery with its split trunk and welcoming shade, create a sense of place that has endured for generations. They filter our air and water, provide homes for countless creatures, and make our neighborhoods beautiful and livable.
West Peoria is fortunate to have a rich history of residents who dedicate themselves to beautifying our local landscape. Alderman Clark Abraham spearheads tree planting initiatives, while the West Peoria Residents Association’s beautification committee diligently maintains the Welcome Wall and city entrances. The Friends of Rocky Glen offer monthly hikes, fostering a connection with nature.
CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF GROWTH: Adding another layer to this dedication is the Peoria Garden Club, celebrating its 100th anniversary. This isn’t just a club; it’s a testament to generations of passionate gardeners who have shaped the landscape not just in West Peoria, but throughout Peoria County. Born in Vonna Brown’s garden in 1924, the club has fostered connections and nurtured green spaces for a century. The members played a part in the West Peoria Welcome Wall, and their centennial celebration includes tree plantings, “Sharing Flowers with Others” initiatives, and informative talks that inspire and educate. Learn more about their rich history through traveling displays at local libraries or visit the Peoria Garden Club website.
STUDENT SCRUM: West Peoria is experiencing a rugby revival, thanks in part to the efforts of Peoria Pigs Rugby Team forward Preston Butner, who’s hosting youth rugby clinics for West Peoria middle school students. With practices scheduled primarily for Thursdays during the fall at the field located at 2109 West Alice, the goal is to foster a new generation of rugby players and eventually establish a high school program. Beyond the sport, the initiative is also making a positive impact: Last year’s youth development program raised more than $50,000, with a portion benefiting Catholic Charities through a diaper and wipe drive. The Peoria Rugby Foundation, supported by a matching program from Caterpillar, is at the heart of these efforts. As Butner shared, “Rugby is more than a contact sport, it’s a way to build lifelong friendships.”
Stop by the field for the next home game scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 24th. Those interested in getting involved can connect with the Peoria Rugby Football Facebook page.
