The Watch: Peoria City Council gets finance report, talks tobacco shop

City of Peoria Finance Director Kyle Cratty reviewed the July 31 unaudited budget and reported to City Council at its Oct. 4 meeting. Revenues were slightly down, but on pace for year-end with sales tax and state income tax strong. Civic Center bridge loan has been repaid in total. Discussion included the effect of grocery sales tax repeal in 2026, with tax deficit of $4 million, as well as growing pension obligations for public safety employees.

Councilors amended existing municipal code regarding existing stand-alone tobacco retail licenses. Corporation Counsel Patrick Hayes discussed proposed changes that could adjust the cap on the number of businesses in an area.
