The Watch: Primary preventing early voting; check out ElectionStats

Peoria County Board of Election Commissioners learned 4,000 people had voted in the primary so far when they met Feb. 11.

Certification for the primary election will be March 12. By statute, early voting should begin March 7, but 18 counties in Illinois have primaries and cannot start early voting until certification. These 18 counties, which include Peoria, will start early voting on March 17. This does not meet election law, but only the Legislature can change the law. Legislators do not seem interested because it does not affect them, only local elections. The State’s Attorney is aware of the inability to meet the statute.

Also at this meeting new commissioner Patrick Jennetten was sworn in to replace Ryan Brady.

ELECTION STATS: The Peoria County Election Commission launched a searchable database with public access called ElectionStats.

The portal at the Election Commission’s website will feature filters for election year, office and election type. Compiled results can be downloaded as a PDF file.
