The Watch: Landfill Committee discusses new #3

On Feb. 19, the Peoria City/County Landfill Committee was asked to look into conditions at the hazardous waste landfill before it becomes the site for the new municipal waste transfer station and public drop-off location.

The Foth Infrastructure & Engineering report had its amended agreement work order for 2025 with the inclusion of splitting costs between GFL and the Committee regarding Landfill 1.

Landfill #2 waste receipts are being limited as much as possible in an effort to help extend the time until Landfill #2 is filled, which is estimated at late spring. Waste receipts for January were 6,000 tons less than last year.

Finalization of the amended Landfill #3 Agreement to proceed with work on the new municipal waste site is still pending. State funding for needed repairs related to the previous coal mine at the municipal waste landfills property was to begin in April, however, those funds relied on federal funds which have been frozen. It is not clear if any planned work to repair a dam, road, and other needs can proceed.

Waste Management submitted its regular load inspection report. No written report was received from GFL.

The Committee approved a motion to change the meetings to every six weeks with the following schedule through 2025: April 2; May 14; June 25; August 6; September 17; October 29; December 10.
