West Peoria News: Sharon Kennedy a fixture of local life

APRIL SILVER

West Peoria lost a local legend with the unexpected death of Sharon Kennedy on Sept. 14. Sharon’s contributions to the community through her writing, organization, and sharp civic mind were invaluable. She spent a lifetime keeping this community informed, connected, and moving forward.

Sharon was a fixture in local public life. Her resume of service was formidable: she served as Chairperson of the Peoria County Board, Township Supervisor for West Peoria, President of the West Peoria Residents Association, and editor for the local newsletter. Her devotion to the community was a mark of her character and her commitment to staying involved.

To those who knew her, Sharon was a force — a mother, business owner, political mind, and loyal friend. She was never one to mince words or shy away from a little spirited verbal sparring, and every opinion she shared was grounded in grace, humor, and eight decades of hard-won wisdom. Whether she was supporting local businesses or offering advice over a glass of wine, her contagious laugh filled every room. Her loss leaves a void in West Peoria that will not easily be filled.

Honoring the legacy of leaders like Sharon Kennedy means continuing to appreciate and care for the community she loved.

FALL COLORS: If you are looking to take in the best of the season, you don’t have to travel far for stunning autumn colors. Rocky Glen Park, tucked away right in our backyard at 525 N. Often described as a miniature Starved Rock, the park features rugged hiking trails, a picturesque waterfall, and rock-climbing options for all skill levels.

The Friends of Rocky Glen, a dedicated, all-volunteer nonprofit, works year-round to preserve the health and recreational value of the Kickapoo Creek watershed. The group hosts regular monthly hikes and restoration workdays, and new volunteers are always welcome. Learn more by visiting friendsofrockyglen.org or by contacting Dave Pittman at (309) 573-2354.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN: As the month wraps up, local families can look forward to a safe and festive Halloween tradition. The City of West Peoria and the West Peoria Residents Association are once again hosting Trunk or Treat from 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at City Hall. Residents who would like to participate by handing out candy from decorated trunks must register with City Hall at (309) 674-1993 by Friday, Oct. 30. It is a fantastic, safe evening for the kids and a great chance for neighbors to catch up.

As the air turns crisp and the leaves fall, the strength of West Peoria continues to show up in our everyday actions. Whether hiking a local trail, handing out candy at City Hall, or supporting our local youth, these moments of connection keep our community grounded and strong.
