Red Cross Offers Summer Safety Tips!

Swim Safety

· Learn to swim. Never swim alone and swim only in supervised areas. Obey “No Diving” signs.

· Outfit everyone with the proper gear. Use U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) in and around the water, especially when boating.

· Always observe children near water and practice “reach supervision” for young children: stay within arm’s length of a child in case an emergency arises.

· Watch out for the dangerous “too’s.” Take a break at the point of being too tired, too cold, or too far from safety, too much sun, too little hydration, too much strenuous activity.

· Don’t mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, and coordination; it affects your swimming and diving skills; and it reduces your body’s ability to stay warm.

· Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts; stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.

Sunburn Prevention

· Protect the skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wear water-proof sunscreen with SPF of at least 15. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before exposure to the sun; reapply often, especially after swimming.

· Certain medications can increase sensitivity to the sun. Check with a physician or pharmacist before planning outdoor activities.

Heat Stroke Prevention

· Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that will reflect some of the sun’s energy. It’s also a good idea to wear hats or use an umbrella.

· Drink lots of water. Carry water or juice and drink continuously, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.

· Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods high in protein, which increase metabolic heat.

· Slow down. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest period of the day (usually between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.).

· Take regular breaks when you are engaged in physical activity on warm days. Take time out to find a cool place. If you recognize that you are showing signs of a heat-related illness, stop activity and find a cool place.

Summer Pet Safety

· Never leave your pet in the car. The inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you are parked in the shade.

· Watch out for fertilizers. Plant food, fertilizer and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them.

· Repel fleas and ticks. Another summertime threat is fleas and ticks. Use only flea and tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Some over-the-counter flea and tick products can be toxic, even when used according to instructions.

· Always make sure your pet has water. Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they’re enjoying the great outdoors so they can stay cool.

New Accreditation is Gold Seal for College of Medicine & Peoria Region

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability, affecting nearly 800,000 people and costing some $60 billion annually in the United States alone. Providing the best and latest in treatment of stroke is increasingly becoming a national focus, and one Peoria is at the forefront.

Adding to the already vast expertise in the field of vascular neurology, the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria has received formal accreditation for a fellowship program specializing in stroke. Approval by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME, essentially gives the existing educational and clinical structure in Peoria the gold seal.

Dr. Thomas Santoro, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, called the fellowship accreditation “highly prestigious,” adding “this fellowship is the embodiment of on-going clinical efforts to grow medical subspecialties within our community.”

Currently, only 67 such stroke fellowships exist nationwide which are accredited by the ACGME. About a quarter of those were created only within the last couple years.

Dr. David Wang, Founder and Director of the Illinois Neurological Institute’s Stroke Network at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology for the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, says the one-year accredited fellowship will continue to draw the best physicians to Peoria for research, education and clinical work to add to the nation’s understanding of stroke.

“There is a desperate need for neurologists nationwide but particularly stroke neurologists,” said Wang who sits on several national neurological association committees and is one of the co-authors of the soon-to-be published updated “AHA/ASA Acute Ischemic Stroke Care Guidelines,” the bible for stroke care.

C. Duane Morgan Sleep Disorders Center at Methodist Receives Program Accreditation

C. Duane Morgan Sleep Disorders Center at Methodist Medical Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates C. Duane Morgan Sleep Disorders Center on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Nancy Collop, AASM president. “The C. Duane Morgan Sleep Disorders Center is a significant resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”

To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center’s facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country.

The C. Duane Morgan Sleep Disorders Center is directed by Ravindra Kashyap, MD.

Methodist Cancer Program Accredited by the Commission on Cancer

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Methodist Medical Center a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation for its Cancer Program.

Methodist was awarded the Accreditation following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which Methodist demonstrated a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement). In addition Methodist received a compliance rating for all other standards.

The Accreditation Program, a component of the CoC, sets quality of care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation is given to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of performance.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that more than 1.6 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year. There are currently more than 1500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S., representing close to 30 percent of all hospitals. This 30 percent of hospitals diagnose and/or treat approximately 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.

To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC-accredited cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
