PEORIA ZOO ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING OF AUSTRALIA WALK-ABOUT

Join the Peoria Zoo and the Peoria Park District on Tuesday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. for the ribbon cutting and Grand Opening of the Australia Walk-About.

In 2000, the Peoria Zoo adopted a Master Plan that designated an Austral-Asian area in the original portion of the Zoo. In 2011, a grant from IDNR Institute of Museums and Library Services awarded $350,000 for the building of the Australia Walk-About. An additional $50,000 from the Peoria Park District Capital Improvement budget completed the project.

The Australia Walk-About exhibit is an Immersion exhibit where the public is confined to a path while animals are free to roam the entire area. The exhibit will house black swans, emus, and Parma wallabies, as well as about 250 budgies in the aviary. The public can purchase seed sticks to feed the budgies by hand.

In addition to an Aviary, there was also a new nighthouse constructed which has an indoor pool for the swans, and a local Eagle Scout created a project with two shade structures in the exhibit area.

Additional funds for landscaping were raised by selling tiles with donor names. These tiles will be displayed on decorative shields within the exhibit.

Regular Zoo admission will be charged for the event – Adults 13+: $8.50; Children 3-12: $4.75; Senior Citizens: $7.50. Consider a Family Membership and you’ll receive unlimited FREE admission to the Peoria Zoo for one full year, plus other great benefits!
