The public is invited for a meal and discussion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 7 at Islamic Foundation of Peoria, 823 W. Salaam Drive.
“We want to challenge the notion that Muslims are strange and mosques are closed,” Imam Mufti said. “Muslims are part of the American fabric like everyone else. We are Republicans and Democrats like everyone else. Muslims matter.”
He said Muslims can trace their American heritage back even before trans-Atlantic slavery.
Understanding the generational role of Islam in America was part of a PBS documentary about an African Muslim prince who was brought to America as part of the slave trade.
“There are many second generation Muslims in Peoria. Our children are in Islamic schools and public schools,” he said. “9/11 created a toxic message that must be corrected. We are not here to spread fear and hate. We are here because America is inclusive and creates equal opportunity for everyone. Muslims love America because it is inclusive. America is great because it is inclusive.”
Twelve billboards are up throughout town in conjunction with the March 7 event to promote interfaith peace.
