An environmental restoration is unfolding north of Chillicothe on the site of a former coal mine. Mike Contratto, center, works with park district employees and volunteers on a foot bridge at Coal Hollow Park. The bridge connects a new parking area with trails in the park. Contratto and other volunteers restored the former coal mine to woodland, lowland creek and savannah. The 48-acre park is currently open daily from sunrise to sunset. An official opening is scheduled for Earth Day 2020.
