“Remember Her, Peoria!” is a new art installation designed to bring attention to the number of women and girls murdered and missing in Peoria County. One estimate puts the number at 88 over the past two decades.
Opening on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 15, at Sous Chef, 1311 SW Adams, the installation will include dresses hung outside the business. The installation will remain through the end of February.
Opening remarks are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Sponsors include Indivisible Peoria Area, NAACP Next Gen, JOLT, Peoria Drum Circle, Peoria Community Against Violence and Soulside Healing Arts.
The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. hosted an exhibit last year, the “REDress Project” to commemorate the number of Indigenous women who have been reported missing. Last year, 5,590 Indigenous women were reported missing to the F.B.I.’s National Crime Information Center.
The Peoria installation is opening on Valentine’s Day to commemorate two women murdered locally by a partner or spouse between 2013 and 2019 on Valentine’s Day.
