Eagerly from Seattle, Wash., I watched her first announcement to run for mayor, reading the Peoria Journal Star, visiting her website — all the time wondering what I could do to ensure that her run was successful and that the city I still call my home realizes Dr. Ali is the change the city needs.

This is by no means because she is a woman or African American but because she is and was the best individual to bring forth fresh ideas that will bring forth a Peoria of unity.

I relocated to Peoria from Chicago in 2014 for employment in higher education. As a professor, it was my goal to obtain employment at Illinois Central College and to move up, inspired to be like Dr. Ali. As a leader and my mentor, she leads with grace, compassion and fairness.

Her vision goes beyond superficial images and focuses on a Peoria that is united. As an outsider, I clearly saw Peoria was divided.

Coming from the south side of Peoria, her passion was for the greater good of the city not just for self. For three years I latched on to her, and I learned as much as I could from Dr. Ali. Unfortunately, because no positions became available, I was forced to move on. However, I took with me resilience, dedication and devotion to hard work that was shown to me by Dr. Ali as my mentor.

Her run for mayor and her win was not just a win for the city. It was a win for professionals like me. I know the constant struggles and barriers facing women of color. She taught by example to remain focused not on the doors that are slammed shut in your face but the windows that are cracked opened.

As I sat and waited patiently for the final mayoral election results, I never doubted what the end result was going to be. As Dr. Ali’s path continues, she will change lives and she will transition onto a larger stage. Now we will watch as she become the change that Peoria didn’t realize it needed.

Dr. Ali, I am so happy to celebrate knowing that your passion and hard work will foster growth and move forward a city with tenacity and strength. I know this is not just a job for you but a calling, and you were chosen to lead.
