Gill: Contradictions in politicians’ trust in parents

First, many conservative politicians and public authorities do not trust parents to make appropriate decisions for their children concerning medical care. Second, they are all too willing to listen to parents who not only want to restrict their own children from exposure to certain library materials, but who also want to make these decisions for everyone else’s children.

Believing that America is a perfect nation because of God’s influence makes everything worse. Any concept of God should begin with love and tolerance towards all His creation. America’s past and present belies any national claim we may make regarding our connection to divinity. Any god who would sanction all of America’s endeavors could not possibly be a righteous god.

Ironically, many Republicans and conservatives who rail against “big government” embrace big government themselves if they can direct it. They want to cut back nationally on financial and nutrition assistance to the vulnerable. Conservative states want to limit or ban abortion, regulate sexuality and gender expression, and restrict gender-affirming medical care.
