A summer day in central Illinois ends with a progression of insect songs starting with numerous species of cicadas giving way to katydid songs and tree crickets that will sing through the night. In the north woods, the darkness is silent.

It is a fancy way of saying that when really, really bad things unexpectedly happen, due to unforeseen circumstances and crises, the need to adapt to handle these challenges positively or negatively will determine how one’s quality of life is influenced. Mass shootings, increased crime and violence, book banning, and historical revisionism — Florida’s 2023 Social Studies curriculum, which will include lessons on how “slaves developed skills” that could be used for “personal benefit.”

Believing that America is a perfect nation because of God’s influence makes everything worse. Any concept of God should begin with love and tolerance towards all His creation. America’s past and present belies any national claim we may make regarding our connection to divinity. Any god who would sanction all of America’s endeavors could not possibly be a righteous god.
