Art Alerts: Peoria Symphony performing ‘Joy of Grace,’ Peoria Players staging ‘The Music Man,’ Cornstock doing ‘The Aliens’

ART

  • Bradley University is presenting two lectures from two artists this month. At 5 p.m. Nov. 9, the Baltimore-based painter MaryAnne Arntzen will appear at the Global Communications Center’s Horowitz Auditorium. At 5 p.m. Nov. 16, wood engraver, printer, designer, poet and illustrator Gaylord Schanilec, a publisher based in Stockholm, Wis., also will make remarks in Horowitz Auditorium in the GCC.

CINEMA

  • “The Marvels” brings back both Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, now united, for good or not, with Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and astronaut Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), together coping with a destabilized universe. Samuel L. Jackson appears.
  • Filmmaker Ridley Scott directed Joaquin Phoenix in a historical epic “Napoleon,” in cineplexes Nov. 22. Josephine is portrayed by Vanessa Kirrby, as the romantic edge to the French military strategist and conquerer.
  • Bradley Cooper directed, co-wrote and stars as conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro,” out Nov. 22 and scheduled to start streaming on Netflix next month. Co-stars include Carey Mulligan, Matt Bomer and Sarah Silverman.

COMEDY

  • Standup comic Jeff Bailey (right) is a Metamora native some wags have dubbed “the King of Weed,” and he’s headlining at the Jukebox Comedy Club Nov. 3-4.
  • Actor John Cleese, known for Monty Pythn, “Silverado” and many other fine performances, is scheduled to appear at the Civic Center Theater on Nov. 12.

STREAMING

  • On Netflix, Shelley Hennig and Nick Zano star in “Obliterated,” about a special-forces team assigned to deal with a threat to Las Vegas. The series is eight episodes, so it’s not an easy task. Premieres Nov. 30.
  • The seven-episode mystery “A Murder at the End of the World” launches on Hulu Nov. 14, with Emma Corrin starring as Gen Z sleuth Darby Hart. She’s at a remote retreat when a guest is found dead. Clive Owen is featured.

The Central Illinois Jazz Society says its November show will be performed by Todd Kelly’s Central Illinois Jazz Orchestra Nov. 19 at the Trailside Center.

MUSIC

  • Grammy Ward-winning country singer/songwriter Dwight Yoakum is set to perform at the Civic Center Theater on Nov. 3.
  • The Peoria Symphony Orchestra is presenting “Joy at Grace” the afternoon of Nov. 4 at Grace Presbyterian Church, where the program will include five concertos and an adagio by composers including Bach, Handel and Vivaldi.
  • The Central Illinois Jazz Society says its November show will be performed by Todd Kelly’s Central Illinois Jazz Orchestra Nov. 19 at the Trailside Center.

THEATER

  • “Menopause: The Musical,” starring Terri Dixon, Donna J. Huntley, Melanie Souza and Kimberly Vanbiesbrouck will be at the Civic Center Theater for a 3 p.m. performance Nov. 5.
  • “The Music Man” will be staged at Peoria Players Nov. 10-12 and 16-19, directed by Mary Ellen Ulrich.
  • “How the Barn Stole Christmas” will be at Barn III dinner theater in Goodfield Nov. 12-Dec. 31.
  • “Million Dollar Quartet,” based on a legendary Memphis musical meetup of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, will be live on stage in the Civic Center Theater Nov. 28-29.
  • Corn Stock Theatre’s winter season continues with “The Aliens” Nov. 10-12 and 17-19, with Collin Schopp, Drake Newnum and Derrick Antrim as three young men talking and teaching and more in a New England coffee shop.
  • The Second City’s “What the Elf?” — described as an “original sketch, variety and improv celebration of the season” — is scheduled Nov. 25 at Illinois Central College’s Performing Arts Center on the East Peoria campus.

TV

  • The British comedy series “Ghosts: UK” debuts on CBS-TV Nov. 16.
