Peoria Health Department Announces Flu Clinic Schedules
The Peoria City/County Health Department announces that this is the time of year for residents to help protect themselves by getting a flu vaccine. It is especially important for those people with chronic medical conditions, children over 6 months of age, pregnant women, and those over age 65.
Public Health Administrator Curt Fenton said, “Vaccination is the primary method for preventing flu and its complications. We are pleased that Peoria County residents will have multiple clinic sites to be vaccinated this year.”
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious disease that can cause fever, sore throat, cough, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue. It can be a serious illness for people of any age, but especially those with respiratory or heart conditions. In addition, it can cause high fevers and seizures in children. Each year, more than 200,000 people nationwide are hospitalized and 36,000 people die from flu-related complications.
Flu vaccines are recommendations for the following individuals:
• People with chronic medical conditions such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, asthma, renal, hepatic or metabolic disorders including diabetes;
•Children over 6 months of age
• Pregnant women
• People over age 65
• Adults and children who are immunosuppressed
• Residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities;
• Caregivers & family members with contact with high risk individuals, including children under 6 months of age who are too young to be vaccinated
