Peoria City/County Health Department officials reported today the first confirmed death related to the H1N1 influenza virus. The Health Department extends its sympathy to the individual’s family and friends.
The Peoria City/County Health Department communicable disease staff followed up with the hospital to learn that the 46-year old female was admitted to the hospital October 16 with multiple underlying medical conditions and passed away on November 2.
With influenza-like-illness continuing to rise in the Peoria area, the Peoria City/County Health Department reminds residents of the serious threat posed by the H1N1 virus. Pregnant women, children and adults through age 24, and people through age 64 with acute underlying medical conditions are most susceptible to the H1N1 flu virus strain. Anyone with underlying medical conditions and experiencing flu-like symptoms and problems like difficulty breathing, dehydration, or chest pain should consult a physician.
The Health Department urges people to take actions to help prevent illness and the spread of the disease in the community by getting both the H1N1 shot and the seasonal flu shot when they are available. Individuals should continue to practice the 3Cs:
Clean your hands frequently,
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing, and
Contain spread of the flu virus by staying home when you are ill.
