State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) announced on Thursday that she has been appointed to serve on four House Committees she believes will position her to more effectively advocate on behalf of her constituents, particularly when it comes to working to create economic opportunity for the Peoria area region.
Gordon has been named to a coveted position, the Vice-Chairwoman of the House Transportation, Roads and Bridges Committee, a post the lawmaker says will allow her to press the case for the many infrastructure needs in the 92nd District and in the Central Illinois region.
“For our economy to grow, we need dependable and safe roadways that can serve growing industries and populations,” Gordon said. “My appointment as Vice-Chair of the Transportation Committee will give me greater insight into the challenges our current infrastructure poses and a good opportunity to make the case for improvements needed in the Peoria area.”
Continuing her work from the previous General Assembly, Gordon will serve on the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee and as an advocate for local veterans on the Veterans Affairs committee. Gordon was also appointed to a new committee aimed at boosting local entrepreneurs called Small Business Empowerment and Workforce Development.
“Understanding that small business is the backbone of the American economy, this committee will allow me greater access and ability to assist small business owners,” Gordon said.
Finally, she will serve on the House Consumer Protection Committee.
“I am looking forward to serving on these committees that are incredibly pertinent to the issues that are facing my constituents,” Gordon added. “The importance of a committee position may seem like a bit of inside baseball, but it’s really an opportunity to have a bit more influence on some specific issues. I believe the committees that I have been appointed to reflect a lot of the concerns I am hearing about from my constituents, such as job creation, protecting consumers, improving education and supporting the brave men and women of the U.S. Military.”
