More than 40 of Peoria’s Local 50 firefighters to run Steamboat in full gear

This September marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks against the United States on 9-11. The year following the attacks, members of the Peoria Firefighters Local 50 started running the Steamboat Classic as a group to honor the fallen firefighters of New York.

In past years, firefighters have run in partial turnout gear, among other things. With this year being the 10th anniversary, members of Local 50 wanted to do something special: An all-time high participation of over 40 firefighters will be running in full turnout gear. Full gear includes coats, bunker pants and helmets.

Local 50’s goal is to show its commitment to the firefighting profession, the community, and of course the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9-11-01.

An invitation was sent to the New York Fire Department, asking for their participation in the Steamboat Classic race this year. Four members have accepted the challenge and will compete in the race.
