The Third Man marks November at Apollo

A suspense film often recalled mostly for its haunting score, “The Third Man” will be the only feature film in November at downtown Peoria’s nonprofit Apollo Theater, which is screening the 1949 gem on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Anton Kara featured the zither in his chart-topping “The Third Man Theme,” but the critically acclaimed movie produced and directed by Carol Reed is also memorable for its screenplay, written by one of the 20 th century’s most respected novelists, Graham Greene, and its core cast.

Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard star in “The Third Man,” which follows a jobless pulp writer (Cotton) as he arrives in post-war Austria only to find that the friend who invited him (Welles) has apparently been killed in a weird traffic mishap. Set in Vienna, partitioned by the Allies and home to a booming black market, the film shows the effort to find the truth behind the death.

Reed’s filmmaking career ran the gamut from “Oliver!” to “The Agony and the Ecstasy”; Greene’s novels included “The Quiet American,” “This Gun for Hire” and “The End of the Affair.”

Show time at the Apollo is 7:00 p.m. Donations are $5 and $4 for kids, students and seniors. For details call (309) 673-4343.
