It has come to our attention that some of the dates included in our September 2012 eNewsletter were incorrect. Some of the dates below have been corrected. We apologize for the error.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of two important events coming up shortly:
1. Our September General Meeting of the League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria will take place tomorrow, September 15, 2012 at 9:30 AM. Subject is: Peoria School District 150 Finances. Peoria School District 150 has a $4 million deficit this year on a budget of $174 million. Its test scores have declined overall, while the number of low income students keeps rising, now at 74 percent. Property taxes pay 39 percent of its income. We will meet with District 150 comptroller/treasurer Dave Kinney for the inside story on the district’s finances and other issues. Bring your questions! Bring a friend of neighbor! This event will take place at the Peoria District 150 Board Room, 3202 N Wisconsin Ave, Peoria, IL, 61603. It is free and open to the public.
2. The public is invited to attend a candidate forum from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, September 24 at the Gateway Building on the Peoria Riverfront, 200 Northeast Water Street. All candidates in contested races for US Congress, Illinois State Senate and House, Peoria County offices and County Board have been invited to attend this event. The audience will be able to ask questions of these candidates.
In addition, a news conference will be held at 5:30 p.m. to announce the official kickoff of the non-partisan LET ME VOTE! campaign to prevent voter suppression in Peoria. The Peoria Area League of Women Voters is a partner in this campaign. Peoria City Election Commission executive director Tom Bride and Peoria. County Clerk Steve Sonnemaker will discuss the history of voter suppression in Peoria, along with ways to prevent it in the forthcoming election. They will also make brief presentations at the candidate forum. This event will take place at the Gateway Building, Peoria Riverfront, 200 Northeast Water Street, Peoria, IL 61602. This event is free and open to the public. Non-partisan voter registrars will be available to register voters.
