Black History Month Celebrated at Peoria Public Library

Peoria Public Library is using poetry, stories and movies this February to teach important lessons about Black History.

On Monday, February 4, the Black History Celebration at Lincoln Branch at 5:00 p.m. will let all ages create a Black History 12 month calendar.

On Tuesday, February 5, at 5:00 p.m. Lincoln Branch will show Zora’s Roots, a documentary about the life of author and anthropologist Zora Neal Hurston. Her story is told through the people who knew her and the places and events that she brought to the world through her writing.

Honor Black artists at “One Night, One Mic: Poetry Honoring Richard Pryor” on Thursday, February 7 at Lincoln Branch at 6:00 p.m. Spoken poetry artist Brandon Thornton will lead the way as all celebrate the life and works of Peoria’s own famous son, Richard Pryor. This program is for all ages.

Bring the whole family to Jazzy Pajama Storytime on Monday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. at North Branch to celebrate Black History Month with stories, songs and activities. Bring a blanket to sit on and wear your pajamas so you are ready for bed when you go home.

On Thursday, February 21 explore the works of the trail-blazing Richard Pryor in depth with a” Richard Pryor Shout-Out Trivia and a Movie” at Lincoln Branch at 6:00 p.m. After testing your knowledge stay and watch Brewster’s Millions. Snacks are provided.

McClure Branch will show the inspirational movie Ruby Bridges on Saturday, February 23 at 2:30 p.m. Based on a true story, all ages will enjoy this showing.

Wrap up Black History month on Monday, February 25 at Lincoln Branch with some creative expression. Choose and then capture a special moment in Black History by creating a collage that focuses on a favorite artist, sports figure, role model and more.
