Peoria (Nov. 1, 2012) – First Federated Church is celebrating 75 years. The church was born out of a marriage of the First Congregational and Second Presbyterian churches in 1937. Today, FFC has more than 770 members with services at 8 & 10 a.m. on Sundays.
“We have the opportunity, in our 75th anniversary year, to refocus activities, build on the tradition of our founders and have a greater positive impact on our congregation and our community in doing God’s work,” said FFC Pastor Rev. Dr. Forrest Krummel. “We are working to ensure future viability of the congregation.”
The official celebration will take place on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. with a walking tour of our history. There will be a thumbnail sketch of Peoria in 1937 by noted historian, Norm Kelly, additional historical displays about the church, a 1937 Chevy automobile, and an historical wedding photo display. A commemorative worship service will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a celebration lunch at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to all, but reservations are required for the lunch.
For the 75th anniversary, the church has commissioned Dr. John C. Orfe to compose an anthem “A New Beginning.” The text is based on Psalm 150, Isaiah 40, and the sermon of Rev. Leonard Odiorne on the day of the church’s dedication.
Orfe won 11 Standard Awards and the Morton Gould Award from ASCAP. His works for solo, chamber, choral and orchestral ensembles have been performed in Russia, Denmark, Canada, Germany, the Baltics, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, Thailand, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and throughout the US. Orfe lives in Peoria and is Composer at the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Temporary Assistant Professor of Music at Bradley University, and organist at University United Methodist Church.
