Peoria, IL – February 13, 2013 – The 13th annual Farmers Share of the Food Dollar Breakfast sponsored by the Peoria County Farm Bureau will be held on Saturday, March 9. The breakfast is an effort to help educate the public on the safe and affordable crops that American farmers produce. It will be served from 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Youth Building at Exposition Gardens in Peoria.
The price of this year’s breakfast is 85 cents. It is calculated based on the farm value of the menu items. The menu includes two pancakes, two 2-ounce whole hog sausage patties, two scrambled eggs, an 8-ounce glass of Prairie Farms milk and an 8-ounce glass of Orange Juice. How is the price figured? It’s the farm value of the wheat in pancakes, a pig, eggs, milk, and Florida orange juice solids. Last year’s price was also 85 cents. There was a large decrease in the price of orange juice which was offset by small increases in eggs, sausage, and wheat for the pancakes.
Along with a delicious breakfast, there will be other activities. Full color photos of rural scenes submitted by members for the Farm Bureau’s photo contest will be displayed and Peoria County farm equipment dealerships will exhibit tractors inside the building.
For the second consecutive year Barnyard Discoveries will be featured. Ron Wasson of rural Peoria County created an educational exhibit which has “live” miniature farm animals. Both children and adults are encouraged to walk through the exhibit.
A silent auction will raise funds for the Peoria County Farm Bureau Foundation. The Foundation supports the Ag Literacy program which is bringing agriculture to hundreds of Peoria County 3rd -6th grade students on a monthly basis. The Foundation also funds agriculture-related college scholarships.
Soy candles, Soy Smooth skin lotion, glass and surface cleaner made from corn, and Peoria County plat books will be available for purchase. FREE ABC’s of agriculture coloring books, crayons made from soybeans, and educational Ag Mags will be available for the children.
The Farm Bureau hopes to see you and your family and friends on Saturday, March 9.
