Because of frequent snow storms and heavy rains, city crews have begun repairing potholes. Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water. When the water gets under the pavement and freezes, the pavement expands, bends and cracks. When the ice melts, the pavement contracts and leaves gaps in the surface under the pavement. As the weight of vehicles pass over the weak spot in the road, pieces of the roadway break away and potholes form. Dramatic shifts in temperature similar to this year’s winter can increase damage and enlarge the potholes.
