Bradley names Dr. David Glassman Provost

Dr. David Glassman has been named Bradley University’s new provost and vice president for academic affairs by President Joanne K. Glasser. His appointment is effective July 1, 2010.

Dr. Glassman is a biological anthropologist who has served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville for the last six years. He was selected after an intensive nationwide search and upon the recommendation of the Provost Search Committee.

“Dr. Glassman brings a great breadth of academic and administrative credentials in higher education to Bradley University,” Glasser said. “He has the academic acumen to help move Bradley forward in our goal to become a university of national distinction. I am confident he will make an important contribution to our students, our faculty, and our University.”

As dean at Southern Indiana, Dr. Glassman supervised 113 full-time and more than 100 part-time faculty members, 10 academic departments, and administered an annual operating budget of $11.5 million.

“Bradley is an incredible university, positively focused upon excellence and student success,” Dr. Glassman said. “I look forward to working with the faculty and administration in continuing the Bradley tradition of excellence and progressing the academic programs towards even greater national distinction. The scholarly and creative opportunities for faculty and students at Bradley are immense. It is an academic jewel.”

Prior to taking the position at Southern Indiana, Dr. Glassman served at Texas State University in San Marcos as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, chairperson of the Department of Anthropology and in various teaching positions between 1985 and 2004. He also taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, the Dental School of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and the University of Texas in Austin. He has received the Favorite Professor Award for teaching excellence six years.

Throughout his 30-year career, Dr. Glassman has provided more than 300 scholarly human identification case reports to law enforcement agencies, medical examiner’s offices and prosecutor’s offices. Dr. Glassman serves on the American Board of Forensic Anthropologists and on the Board of Editors of the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology.

Dr. Glassman earned doctorate and master’s degrees in anthropology from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also served two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Behavioral Medicine Laboratory at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio.

The provost is Bradley’s chief academic officer and the university’s second-ranking administrative officer. Dr. Glassman replaces Dr. Robert Bolla, who has served as interim provost and vice president of academic affairs for the last two years.
