Research is the Cure for Cancer

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria marked a milestone in cancer research today with a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of a new 24,000 square foot cancer research center. This remarkable new building will further the research of internationally known scientist Dr. Jasti Rao and his team of cancer researchers. The new laboratory space will also help the College to recruit additional bright and talented cancer researchers.

“My life’s goal is to improve the quality of life and survival rates for cancer patients,” said Dr. Rao, Senior Associate Dean for Research. “I have always dreamed of having a facility and the necessary funds to recruit other research experts to help reach these goals.”

The new facility will expand the already successful cancer research program. Since its inception in 2001, the cancer research program has received over $27.7 million in grants and published 150 papers. Dr. Rao has discovered and patented a promising new anti-cancer treatment. This patented discovery is now being safety tested before progressing to trials in humans.

The cancer research center project has been a collaborative effort between UICOMP, the Heartland Partnership and numerous key stakeholders throughout the region. “This new and modern building represents the bright future of the College of Medicine. It symbolizes how our community works together to accomplish great things,” said Regional Dean Dr. Sara Rusch. She acknowledged the community, university, city, state and federal support for the program. “Our community is blessed with great leadership and we’ve united behind our desire to cure this dreaded disease.”
