LWV: Allen Mayer discusses presidential elections

Greater Peoria League of Women Voters Program:

Electing the President of the United States 2016

or……..

There’s a lot more to running for President than you learned 8th grade civics class (or Season 3 of House of Cards).

League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria presents a program on electing the President of the U.S. at its General Meeting at 6pm on March 3, 2016 at Advanced Medical Transport (AMT) auditorium, 1718 N. Sterling, Peoria 61604.

The event features a lecture, discussion, and details with Allen Mayer, Peoria County Board Member and confessed political junkie. He’s a graduate of the Illinois Math and Science Academy, received his degree in Political Science with honors from the University of Chicago, and earned his law degree with honors from the University of Illinois.

His presentation will include more than the basics of the Electoral College and the difference between a caucus and a primary.

He will discuss an unpledged PLEO and why Democrats have them, but not Republicans, as well as why Illinois Republicans have a beauty contest and district level alternate delegates, but Illinois Democrats have a 15% viability threshold and advantaged gender districts. He will discuss how delegates get on the ballot (or even get selected without an election), and the difference between Buckley and Citizens United, and what happens if the Electoral College ends in a tie. Questions are welcome and should be plentiful. The event is free and open to the public.

The League is a non-partisan, issues oriented, volunteer, member-directed organization committed to open, responsive and effective government brought about by informed, involved citizens with membership open to both men and women in Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties. FIGHT HATE WITH COMMUNITY DIALOGUE: 6 -8 p.m. March 7, ISLAMIC FOUNDATION OF PEORIA

ABOUT THE EVENT

A Community Event to bring together Jews, Christians, and community leaders in solidarity to fight hate and celebrate the rich diversity of Peoria’s Muslim residents.

DATE: March 07, 2016

TIME: 6:00 – 8:00pm

LOCATION: 823 Salaam Dr, Peoria, IL

RSVP THE EVENT HERE

WHY ARE WE DOING IT?

As a result of Islamophobia, Muslims are sadly viewed with increased suspicion and fear these days and are painted with a broad brush. Mosques, where we pray and socialize, are being incorrectly viewed as unwelcome, closed places.
Our goal is to:
  • Fight fear by opening our doors and hearts
  • Bring Jews, Christians, Muslims, and other voices together to stand against prevalent Islamophobia (irrational fear of Islam and Muslims)
  • Build loving relationships rooted in the genuine traditions of each faith without denying our differences
  • Invite the “whole” city so our friends and neighbors can see us, meet with us, and hear community and religious leaders speak

7 in 10 Americans support access to abortion

Today is the anniversary of that historic day in 1973 when the Supreme Court, in a landmark decision, affirmed abortion as a constitutionally protected right.

But you and I both know the story didn’t end there.

In the 43 years since Roe v. Wade, anti-choice extremists have partnered with politicians across the country to pass wave upon wave of legislation with a singular goal: to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision and make abortion so inaccessible that it’s effectively illegal all over again.

Sure, those extremists are vocal. They’re also the minority in this country: Polling consistently shows that 70% of Americans believe in safe and legal access to abortion. On the anniversary of Roe, will you share this graphic on Facebook to show you won’t be silent in the face of these relentless attacks?

I am one of the 7 in 10 Americans who support Roe v. Wade.

Reproductive freedom—which is key to a woman’s ability to decide if, when, how and with whom to start a family—is in danger in this country.

  • In 2015 alone, 22 states enacted 41 anti-choice measures.
  • 23 states have anti-choice governments, where the state governor & majority of legislature are anti-choice.
  • 29 states have measures that prohibit insurance plans from covering abortion.
  • 32 states and D.C. impose restrictions on low-income women’s access to abortion.1

Every Roe anniversary that passes is another reminder that too much is at stake to say silent. Click here to share the above graphic on Facebook today and help spread the message of the pro-choice majority.

Don’t have Facebook? Check out these other ways to share.

Thank you for all you do for reproductive freedom.
