Senator Shadid Donates Campaign Funds to Bradley University

Peoria, IL (August, 15, 2013) Retired State Senator George Shadid is donating his remaining campaign funds to Bradley University. Shadid announced that he will donate $25,000 to the George P. Shadid Jr. Scholarship fund and $11,730 to the Institute for Principled Leadership in Public Service (IPL). Shadid says he chose these programs because they are designed to develop leaders who will have a significant and positive impact on our region in the future.

During his time in the state senate, Shadid was known for his bipartisanship efforts. Brad McMillan, Executive Director of the IPL says the Institute strives to teach the type of bipartisanship that Shadid’s career embodied. “Senator Shadid has a long history of working across the aisle for the good of this region. He worked closely with then Congressman LaHood on the I-74 reconstruction project and other leaders on projects like the UICOMP Cancer Research Center and the Peoria Riverfront Museum. He reached across party lines to make good things happen. That’s the type of leadership the Institute seeks to promote.”

Nathan Thomas, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs at Bradley, says the donation to the George P. Shadid Jr. scholarship fund within the Lewis J. Burger Center for Student Leadership and Public Service will help enhance the education of our students and future leaders. “Senator Shadid dedicated his life to leadership and service within our community. This scholarship models Senator Shadid’s example in allowing our students to focus on their education, while committing themselves, beyond the norm, to leadership and service.”

The scholarship helps support the Bradley University Fellows. In this program 15 freshmen Fellows are selected and commit to leadership, volunteerism and service. “Our goal is to develop student leaders on campus and future leaders for the region and beyond,” Thomas says.

Senator Shadid was first elected to the state senate in 1993 and retired December 2006.

OSF SAINT FRANCIS CENTERS FOR BREAST HEALTH OFFER NEW 3D MAMMOGRAM

(Peoria, IL / August 15, 2013) – A mammogram is an important breast cancer screening tool. The OSF Saint Francis Centers for Breast Health now offer a three-dimensional mammogram called 3D Breast Tomosynthesis at the Center for Health Rt. 91 and Morton locations.

3D mammography is a new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that is done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram.

“3D breast Tomosynthesis provides images of the breast in thin slices that allow the radiologist to assess the breast slice by slice, like pages in a book,” explains Dr. Jessica Guingrich with Central Illinois Radiological Associates. “This helps the radiologist see findings that could be obscured by overlapping tissue and better visualize normal tissue structures.”

The additional 3D images make it possible for a radiologist to gain a better understanding of the breast tissue during a screening or diagnostic mammogram, and the confidence to reduce the need for follow-up imaging.

The upgraded 3D mammography systems at the Center for Health Rt. 91 and Morton allow the 3D imaging to be done at the same time with no additional compression required, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view.

Women in our community have an important decision to make before scheduling their next mammogram. Do you prefer a 3D tomosynthesis mammogram? Here are the criteria to consider:

– If this is your baseline mammogram.
– If you have dense breast tissue. Women are encouraged to ask their physician if they have dense breast tissue, as it is a risk factor for breast cancer.
– If you have breast cancer risk factors that concern you. Women are encouraged to discuss risk factors with their physician.

For more information about the new 3D breast Tomosynthesis offered at the OSF Saint Francis Centers for Breast Health visit www.osfsaintfrancis.org/breastcenter or call 309-683-5522.

UnityPoint Health-Methodist receives American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Silver Quality Achievement Award for heart attack care

PEORIA, IL. AUGUST 15, 2013 — UnityPoint Health-Methodist has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes Methodist’s commitment and success in implementing an exceptional standard of care for heart attack patients.

Each year in the United States, nearly 300,000 people have a STEMI, or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, the most severe form of heart attack. A STEMI occurs when a blood clot completely blocks an artery to the heart. To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.

Hospitals involved in Mission: Lifeline are part of a system that makes sure STEMI patients get the right care they need, as quickly as possible. Mission: Lifeline focuses on improving the system of care for these patients and at the same time improving care for all heart attack patients.

As a “STEMI Receiving Hospital,” UnityPoint Health-Methodist meets high standards of performance in quick and appropriate treatment of STEMI patients to open the blocked artery. Before they are discharged, patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers and they receive smoking cessation counseling if needed. Hospitals must adhere to these guidelines-based measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards.

“Methodist is dedicated to making our cardiac unit among the best in the country, and the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program is helping us accomplish that by making it easier for our professionals to improve the outcomes of our cardiac patients,” said Tina Miller Executive Director of Cardiovascular Services. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care, and I am very proud of our team.”
