PEORIA RESIDENT BECKY ZENTKO TO JOIN HUNDREDS AT 25TH ANNIVERSARY WALK MS, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, AT TOWER PARK

CHICAGO— Peoria resident Becky Zentko was diagnosed with benign multiple sclerosis in 2008 following a bout of pars planitis, a rare inflammation of the eye that is sometimes linked to MS. A few months following her diagnosis, an MRI revealed evidence of new lesions on the brain and she was re-diagnosed with relapsed-remitting multiple sclerosis, the most common form of the disease.

Zentko’s plight began to resemble that of her mother, who also at the age of 49, was diagnosed with MS before passing away from cancer complications.

“Toward the end of her life, I watched the disease steal her mobility and her ability to fight back,” said Zentko “When I was diagnosed I was scared and uncertain of the future and I knew I didn’t want to let the disease affect me the way it did my mother.”

In 2008, Zentko decided to be proactive in battling her MS, participated for the first time in Walk MS, the largest annual fundraiser of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Illinois Chapter. Two years later, she and her husband formed Bright Future, their Walk MS team, and began recruiting friends to help them raise funds and awareness.

“I had such a feeling of hope and encouragement that first year—there was so much possibility,” said Zentko. “I walked hand-in-hand with my husband and we both knew that no matter what was in store for us, we’d be ok because we had each other.”

Zentko and Bright Future, now 30-members strong, will once again participate in Walk MS and celebrate the event’s 25th anniversary with hundreds of other walkers, Sunday, September 8, at Tower Park (1222 East Kingman Avenue) in Peoria Heights.

Knowing that every dollar counts in their fundraising efforts, Zentko and her team have gotten creative in recent years—holding bake sales, garage sales, and simply asking friends and family to donate what they can. Collectively, they raised over $3,700 last year and are aiming to top that amount in 2013.

“My son and daughter-in-law sell Mardi Gras beads they bring back from New Orleans and match the donation, it’s brought in over $1,000,” said Zentko. “We even have a friend who is collecting donations to cut his hair and donate it to Locks of Love. The possibilities are endless when you get creative.”

Peoria’s Walk MS event is part of a 13-site network of walks taking place throughout Illinois, bringing over 12,000 people together with a goal of raising over $2.7 million for MS research, programs and services.

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The disease affects more than 20,000 individuals in Illinois and 2.1 million worldwide.

The Greater Illinois Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. Envisioning a world free of MS, the Chapter moves toward that end by driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, collaborating with others and by providing helpful programs and services. Food Safety Inspections Now Available on Website

Peoria County – The Peoria City/County Health Department now provides food safety inspection results through a new link on its website www.pcchd.org. As part of the food safety regulation program, the Health Department licenses and inspects all food service establishments in Peoria County.

“This new online link to food safety inspection records provides an opportunity for the consumer to make an informed decision concerning their food purchase,” says Wil Hayes, Director of Environmental Health at Peoria City/County Health Department. “Periodic inspections provide a snapshot of the food safety practices being conducted within a food establishment. If an establishment does not do well during an inspection, Health Department staff work to educate the food workers in safe food handling and hygienic practices.”

Health Department sanitarians conduct unannounced inspections in over 1100 licensed food establishments in Peoria County. The inspections or risk assessments are based on the Food Safety Chapter of the Peoria County Code. The inspections address critical and non-critical violations. Critical violations include, but are not limited to improper food temperatures, contaminated foods, cross-contamination and poor personal hygiene. Non-critical violations affect the overall sanitation level of the establishment and include, but are not limited to unclean floors, soiled surfaces, and general maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.

Hayes explains, “The food safety program includes the review of these inspection reports to evaluate our efforts to implement food safety strategies to prevent and control food borne illness within our community. We look forward to hearing comments from the public on the use of this new online link to the food safety inspections.”

For more information or comments on the website inspection link or other public health issues, call the Peoria City/County Health Department Environmental Health Division at 309-679-6161 or visit the website at www.pcchd.org.

Gordon-Booth Classrooms First Legislation Signed into Law

PEORIA, IL – As part of her ongoing efforts to assist local schools and students, legislation sponsored by state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria) to make it easier for school districts to consolidate was recently signed into law.

“School districts across the state are trying to do more with less,” Gordon-Booth said. “This new law will make it easier for school districts that choose to consolidate. Mergers can allow school districts to share resources, save money, and invest more in their students.”

The Classrooms First Commission was charged with identifying ways for school districts to reduce duplicative administrative spending and increase educational offerings. House Bill 2267 contains three suggestions from the Class Rooms First Commission’s final report.

Under this proposal, non-contiguous school districts within 30 miles of each other would be allowed to consolidate. Schools districts that have an enrollment of fewer than 750 students would be allowed to participate in an expedited dissolution. This would allow school districts would be able to dissolve without a referendum vote. This measure would also permit school districts waiting for school construction funds to delay consolidation until those funds have been awarded.

“This law will not force school districts to consolidate, but it will help school districts that are interested,” Gordon-Booth said. “It is important that lawmakers give school districts and communities the tools they need to make the decisions that are best for them.”
