Midwest women were essential to defining contemporary arts and society throughout the 20th century.
As part of its fall-winter 2015 spotlight on Illinois women artists and influencers, Peoria Riverfront
Museum will feature a free lecture and display on Betty Friedan, beginning the weekend of Oct. 24.
The free lecture, Betty Friedan’s Mark on History and Peoria’s Mark on Her, will be presented in the
museums Giant Screen Theater, Oct. 25, 2 p.m. by former Peoria Journal Star editor and journalist,
Barbara Mantz Drake, who interviewed Friedan at length in 1999 for the Journal Star and WTVP.
Friedan, who was born Bettye Naomi Goldstein, Feb. 4, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., was a journalist herself and
arguably the most influential feminist of the era as co-founder of the National Organization of Women
(NOW) and author of The Feminine Mystique (1963).
Drake will discuss the indelible mark left by Friedan on Peoria, as well as the influence that Friedan and
her no-nonsense Midwest upbringing had on the Womens Movement worldwide. For instance, Friedan learned early on the power of group action. As a writer for the Peoria High School (PHS) newspaper, her request to write a column was turned down. She and her friends then started a literary magazine, Tide, where they could write about contemporary issues. Friedan told Drake, “If there was a problem, you could organize the community to deal with the problem.
Drake, a member of the Betty Friedan Committee, also coordinated the display which will be located in
the museums main lobby from Oct. 24 through Dec. 13. The display contains an autographed copy of
“The Feminine Mystique, the five other books Friedan wrote, original articles from national publications, photographs, and hometown memorabilia that includes a 1938 PHS yearbook, a photo of her Farmington Road family home and many other items gathered from local collections.
The display also contains Friedans PHS Tide essay, “I Am Paper,” in which, according to Drake, she argues that a seemingly insignificant object such as a piece of paper has extraordinary powers because of its potential to frame big ideas and carry important arguments.

Illinois Central College’s 2014-2015 Gallion Award Winner Signs Book Contract with Distinguished Press

Peoria, IL, September 29, 2015:  Joe Chianakas, professor of communication at Illinois Central College, signed a contract for a horror fiction series through Distinguished Press. The first book,Rabbit in Red, releases on September 29.
Illinois Central College recently awarded Chianakas with their Gallion Award, the highest teaching honor for full-time faculty. While working on Rabbit in Red, Chianakas collaborated with a variety of local artists, most notably local pop-punk band Terribly Happy, comprised of current and former ICC students, who produced “Enter the Rabbit,” an adrenaline-pumping song inspired by the novel.
Here is the current back of the book synopsis: Bill Wise has blood in his past, so he turns to horror films to wipe it clean. Jaime Stein has felt the betrayal of death, so she too takes refuge in the on-screen deaths of others. Now Bill, Jaime, and seventeen other horror-loving teens have gathered at Rabbit in Red Studios, the brainchild of eccentric horror producer Jay “JB” Bell, for the terror-filled, blood-drenched contest of their lives. JB has presented this competition as a race between the best of the best that will reward the winners with cash, internships, and a career making the movies they love. But things aren’t always as they seem at Rabbit in Red, and soon life starts to imitate art. Will Bill and Jaime be strong enough to confront real horror to save their friends, or will they all fall victim to JB’s twisted plans?
The book will be available online through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other major online booksellers beginning September 29. I Know You Like a Book in Peoria Heights will host Chianakas for a party and book signing Saturday October 17 at 4:00 p.m. The party will include live music by Terribly Happy and a costume contest—dress as your favorite horror character for a chance to win prizes.
Previously, Chianakas taught English at Metamora High School. In addition to teaching, Chianakas, 36, runs the Cougar Karate Club at Illinois Central College and teaches fitness classes at the ICC CougarPlex. He loves to write and is excited to introduce the world to Rabbit in Red.
