Methodist Teacher Awarded Gateways to Opportunity Credential

A Chillicothe resident and staff member of the Methodist Family Child Care Center has been recognized by Gateways to Opportunity. Kathy Culbertson, Lead Teacher at the Methodist Child Care Center has received the Illinois Director Credential, Level I given by Gateways of Opportunity. Gateways credentials are recognized by the State of Illinois and awarded through the Illinois Department of Human Services Bureau of Child Care and Development.

Culbertson has previously received the Infant Toddler Credential, Level 4 and Early Childhood Education Credential, Level 4.

The Gateways to Opportunity awards are based on education level, knowledge, skills and experience of the individual in early care and education.

Community Foundation of Central Illinois Announces March 2012 Grant Cycle

Proposals Due: March 1, 2012 @ 4:30 PM

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois (CFCI) is currently accepting grant proposals from non-profit organizations within a 50-mile radius of Peoria , excluding McLean County .

Newly revised grant guidelines may be downloaded from the CFCI website at www.communityfoundationci.org and are available at the office, 331 Fulton Street, Suite 310 , Peoria , Illinois 61602 .

Proposals must be received at the Community Foundation of Central Illinois office by: 4:30 PM, March 1, 2012. Proposals received after this date will not be accepted.

The Community Foundation’s purpose is to assist projects in the fields of education, arts, health, human services, community service or community development and advance ONE OR MORE of the following objectives:
1. Address and help resolve important existing or emerging community issues.
2. Support new and creative projects and organizations offering the greatest opportunity for positive and significant change.
3. Promote cooperation and collaboration among organizations.
4. Identify, enhance, and develop leadership in the community through creative and innovative activities which empower individuals.
5. Improve the quality or scope of charitable work in the community.

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois does not provide grant funding for annual campaigns, individuals, endowments, or make grants for sectarian religious purposes.

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois Announces 2012 Scholarship Opportunities for Central Illinois Students

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois (CFCI) has opened the 2012 scholarship cycle and invites students to view its diverse and career specific scholarships on its website at: www.communityfoundationci.org.

Free Developmental Screenings

Child and Family Connections will be conducting free developmental screenings for children birth – three years on Monday, February 13, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Screenings will be conducted at the Care and Treatment Board office located at 2016 N. Knoxville in Peoria . By participating in a screening, parents will better understand developmental milestones and what to expect during different stages of their child’s development.

WCBU to Host “Evening with Garrison Keillor;” “I Know You Like a Book” to handle Book Signing

JOYCE THOME BENEFIT FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF ILLINOIS RAISES MORE THAN $315,000

Each year, in loving memory of his mother, future hall of fame major league baseball player and central Illinois native Jim Thome and his wife, Andrea, host a dinner and auction to benefit Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

The 2012 Joyce Thome Benefit for Children’s Hospital was held Saturday, January 14, 2012 in the Peoria Civic Center Ballroom and marked the 17th anniversary of the event. The fundraising evening was originally started by Joyce Thome. Jim changed the name of the event to honor her memory following her death.

A record breaking 800 people attended this year, raising more than $315,000 for the hospital including $100,000 received during the Live Auction to help fund an echocardiogram (also called an echo). An echo is a type of ultrasound test that is used to see different parts of the heart through moving pictures.

The fun evening included a program featuring Jim’s journey to hit 600 career home runs, becoming eighth on Major League Baseball’s all-time home run list.

Presenting partners for the evening are The Chicago White Sox, ATS, and Humana.

Monster Jam® and the W.D. Boyce Council Team Up to Crush Hunger

Feld Motor Sports℠ is teaming up with local Boy Scouts to help CRUSH HUNGER in the Peoria area. From 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012, Boy Scouts will be collecting canned goods in the Great Hall/Lobby at the Peoria Civic Center.

Every fan donating at least one canned good will be entered to win 4 front row tickets to next year’s show, along with a package of official Monster Jam® signed merchandise. All canned goods collected will be donated to the W.D. Boyce Council’s spring canned food drive that benefits local food pantries. During the 2:00 pm performance on Saturday, monster trucks will “crush” a car in tribute to this food drive, and the prize package winner will be also be announced.

GRAVE DIGGER is back and celebrating its 30th anniversary with a specially painted truck. First time trucks to the Peoria area include HOT WHEELS and SAMSON and returning trucks include RAMINATOR, RAMMUNITION and RAP ATTACK.

Approximately 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, monster trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, monster trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster trucks can fly up to125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air.
