Busy Weeks Start for The Salvation Army

Giant Red Kettle, Gift Wrap Booth Signal Busy Season for Events

The Salvation Army has had its familiar red kettles at stores throughout central Illinois for over 100 years, but they have never had one like the kettle that will be at JC Penney’s in the Northwoods Mall beginning tomorrow. The usual kettle and stand will be replaced by a 700 pound 4 ½ foot tall kettle that will be in place the remainder of the season. (We anticipate the kettle will be in place by 10 am Thursday, December 1st.)

“Our Quad Cities office had two made last year, and this year, 6 more of our corps throughout the division had one fabricated,” said Rich Draeger of The Salvation Army. The unique kettles can also be found in Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur, Kankakee and Burlington, Iowa. Johnson Contracting of East Moline fabricated the kettles, which actually do serve as regular kettles, manned by bell-ringers. “We will have it at JC Penney and in the future, hope to use it around town for various other events,” said Draeger.

The Salvation Army will also be opening its Gift Wrap Booth in Northwoods Mall this weekend. The Gift Wrap Booth will be stationed near JC Penney on the lower level of the mall and will gift wrap for folks who are busy doing their holiday shopping at the mall.

“We are very grateful for the wonderful relationship we have with Rich Hudson and everyone at JC Penney, as well as Jeff Case and Bob Schertz at Northwoods Mall and are looking forward to the next few busy weeks,” said Major Evie Diaz, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army has nearly 40 kettle sites, including Bass Pro Shops in East Peoria, along with many counter kettle locations. For more information on helping out with ringing, go to www.ringbells.org.

Gordon Urges Local Residents to Submit Ideas for Legislation

[EDITOR’S NOTE: How many politicians do you know that asks for your opinions and/or advice for potential legislation ideas?!! Put on your thinking caps folks!]

As the 2012 spring legislative session approaches, state Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) is calling upon constituents to come forward with ideas and suggestions for legislation she can explore in preparation for the upcoming spring session.

“I encourage my constituents to think about the issues in our community that need to be addressed in Springfield, and let me know of any solutions they come up with,” Gordon said. “Whether it is a far-reaching problem or a concern exclusive to the Peoria area, I welcome my constituents’ thoughts and proposals. Many of the best ideas for legislation come from my constituents and I look forward to finding out any of the new ideas that are out there.”

The first day of the 2012 session is January 31. The legislative session presents an opportunity to continue working to address the state’s budget crisis and pass meaningful legislation to help the families of Illinois.

“Not every idea will make its way into legislative form, but for me it is important that we think outside the box and be innovative in our efforts to tackle the many challenges facing our state,” Gordon added. “Whether it is working to create job opportunities, reforming our education system, creating safer neighborhoods or improving health care, all of it depends on the feedback of those I represent. I encourage anyone who has and idea to let my office know so we can spend some time doing the appropriate research and exploring possible legislation.”

To submit your idea for legislation, please contact Rep. Gordon’s constituent service office at (309) 681-1992, e-mail repjgordon@gmail.com, or visit www.facebook.com/repjgordon.

Koehler acts to protect police officers from hearing loss

Earlier today, State Senator Dave Koehler (D‐Peoria) passed legislation that will allow police officers who serve on SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) or Tactical Response Teams to possess and use silencers. Medical authorities believe that the use of silencers will reduce hearing loss for these law enforcement professionals.

“Police officers already have a dangerous job that requires them to risk death or disability every day — especially the members of SWAT Teams,” explained Koehler. “During tense situations, they need all their senses intact. Fifteen seconds of hearing loss can be critical in a hostage situation.”

Under existing Illinois law, only federally‐licensed arms manufacturers can own silencers, and they cannot sell them within the state. Anyone else possessing a silencer—even a police department—is guilty of a class three felony, punishable by a $25,000 fine or two‐to‐five years in prison.

“This bill is a good compromise that helps keep silencers out of the hands of criminals, but allows the men and women who protect our homes and communities to use them to minimize health risks,”

Koehler said. “We even limited silencer possession to members of SWAT and Tactical Response Teams, the people who are most likely to discharge their firearms during the course of their work.”

The legislation, House Bill 1708, passed both chambers of the General Assembly unanimously and now goes to the governor for his approval.
