FISH ON! Redneck Fishing Tournament returns to Bath, IL on Aug. 1, 2

BATH, IL – The annual battle against the invasive Asian carp returns to the Illinois River waters off Bath, IL on Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday, Aug. 2. The two-day festival features music, entertainment and one of the only fishing competitions where poles aren’t allowed and helmets are encouraged.

This year’s entertainment lineup includes musical acts Redneck DJ with Jeff Conover, Music Vision, the Devin Clemons Band, Cedar Ridge from Springfield and features “The Voice” performer Gracia Harrison. There are also Redneck Tournament games, a Queen and King Carp contest, raffles, food stands, a beer garden, and memorabilia. The tournament closes out on Sunday, Aug. 3 with a free kids fishing tournament (The reel kind. Bring a pole and bait).

Schedules and detail are included below and available at: www.originalredneckfishin.com

Tournament proceeds will provide financial assistance to veterans.

This marks the ninth year for the unusual fishing exhibition that began as one woman’s local protest. Here’s the background on Asian carp and the tournament.

This type of carp was used to control vegetation in commercial catfish farms. When the Mississippi River flooded in the 1990s, those farms were swamped and the carp got into the river. With no natural predators they’ve migrated north, infesting stretches of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The fish destroy vegetation and wipe out native species. Millions of dollars are being spent to try to keep them out of the Great Lakes.

Another major problem is they react to the sound of boat motors by jumping out of the water, often at great speed and height. What once was a relaxing boat ride has become a full-contact sport as boaters try to dodge slimy flying carp.

That’s how the Redneck Fishing Tournament began. Betty DeFord was fed up with the fish pelting her grandchildren. She organized the first tournament and, it’s taken off from there. The goal is to catch as many fish as possible with nets or your hands. Last year’s champion “caught” 480 carp in two hours.

Easter Seals Receives Funding for iCan Bike

Bloomington, June 17, 2014 – Easter Seals received a grant from the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation through the Youth Engaged in Philanthropy fund, providing scholarships for 12 children to attend iCan Bike in Bloomington.

The vast majority of people with disabilities never experience the thrill of independently riding a two-wheeled bicycle.  Research shows
that over 80% of people with autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never learn to ride a two-wheeled bike.

iCan Bike uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride a two-wheeled bike.  Participants attend one 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied by a volunteer spotter.  Over the course of the week, the bikes are adjusted in an effort to challenge riders appropriately as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.  The program is offered to individuals ages 8 and up who have a diagnosed disability and are able to walk without assistive devices.

Easter Seals has been coordinating iCan Bike camps for over eight years, and will offer the 2014 camp July 7 – 11, at the Army National Guard in Bloomington, Illinois.

Volunteers are needed.  Volunteers are paired up with a specific child for the full week of iCan Bike and serve as spotters, walking or running alongside the rider to provide encouragement and physical support as needed.

For information on iCan Bike or to volunteer contact Tara Wellenreiter at 309-686-1177 or visit www.ci.easterseals.com.
