ARTIST BRIAN SELKE TO EXHIBIT AT LUTHY BOTANICAL GARDEN MUM SHOW

Artist Brian Selke will exhibit his new work, “Involving Doors,” during Luthy Botanical Garden’s annual Mum Show, October 14 – November 7

Concerning his exhibit, Selke explains, “These doors cannot be opened, slammed or locked. Involving Doors stands isolated from walls that hold it or frames that brace it. Detached from normal support structure, the doors are liberated from the threshold position of determining and navigating “in and out” or “enter and exit.” No longer a barrier for stagnate spaces, these doors move the viewer past definable tangibility. The viewer is invited to move throughout the exhibit in a similar way people move through life. Importance lies not in any specific path or any specific door, but in the persistent progression within the viewer to keep moving forward, even if you end up behind where you were before.”.

Involving Doors can be viewed outside, in the Garden’s Crabapple Cove, during the Mum Show. Regular Garden admission applies – $2 for adults age 13 and up. Children 12 and under are admitted free, and there is no admission charge to visit the Garden Shop, which will have selected merchandise marked down during the Mum Show.

Garden hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays, and closed on Mondays.

Elmwood receives $99,000 grant to help bring small businesses to town

Colleen Callahan, state director for USDA Rural Development, will present a $99,000 check to Elmwood Mayor John Hulslander this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. to be used to establish a revolving loan fund. Through the new Elmwood Revolving Loan Fund, start-up businesses will be able to apply for loans of up to $25,000 at a reduced interest rate. The city will use the funds to attract start up businesses to vacant sites in its reclaimed downtown.

After a tornado virtually destroyed downtown Elmwood last June local residents found USDA Rural Development a resource to help rebuild the city, not as it used to be, but the way they wanted it to be.

For details on the check presentation please contact Joan Messina (217) 871-3702.

The Economic Development Council for Central Illinois (EDC), a company of The Heartland Partnership, assisted Elmwood with the application and administration of its Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
