“Running With The Dogs 5K Run/3K Walk” to benefit local organization that provides service dogs for children and adults with disabilities

May 15, 2014 (Peoria, Illinois) — One of Peoria’s most unique road races will take place on June 7, 2014 at Junction City Shopping Center. Paws Giving Independence’s 2nd Annual Running with the Dogs encourages runners and walkers to not only bring their pets, but to participate in the walk with their dogs as well. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. with the 5K Race and 3K Walk beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m. The races takes place on Prospect Road and goes through both Peoria and Peoria Heights, with post-race festivities taking place at Junction City.
Running with the Dogs is a unique event in the area, but one that fits perfectly into the mission of the group that is sponsoring the event – Paws Giving Independence [PGI].  “A race that promotes the bond between humans and dogs seems only fitting for us as we know first-hand the benefits our service dogs bring to the people they are matched with and their families” said Laura Strauch, the event chairperson. “We are an all-volunteer group and to have an event that appeals to dog-lovers in the community will hopefully draw more attention to the great work this organization does in the Peoria-area.”
The motto, “Saving a Life, to Change a Life”, has held true for over 50 dogs and families sin the Peoria-area. PGI’s mission is to place highly trained service dogs with children and adults with disabilities – free of charge. PGI works with various animal shelters in the community to rescue dogs and train them to open/close a door, turn on/off a light, carry a backpack, pick up a dropped item, brace for transfers, retrieve a telephone, pull a wheelchair and ultimately provide independence and support.
“PGI is so appreciative of the support we receive from local animal adoption groups, that we wanted the race-day’s activities to showcase the good work they are doing for the community as well.  We feel that sharing the post-race activities with other animal groups would make for a great event for all dog-lovers!” Strauch shared.
Registration for the event is $25 until June 1st and can be completed online at the newly redesigned PGI wewbsite: www.givingindependence.org.
