August 12: In the fourth season of “Reacher,” based on Lee Child’s series of novels, Jack Reacher is on a New York City subway when he suspects a woman of being a suicide bomber and finds himself drawn into a complicated fight with terrorists. Based on the novel “Gone Tomorrow,” Reacher (Alan Ritchson) finds help from a local detective. Amazon Prime.
August 13: MLB’s “Field of Dreams” game at the ballpark in rural Dyersville, Iowa, will feature the Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies. Netflix.
August 16: A crime drama that happens to have superhero protagonists, “Lanterns” stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two Green Lanterns, intergalactic cops whose power stems from power rings that let their wearers create anything they can imagine, depending on their will. One dynamic is that Jordan is near retirement, and Stewart is a rookie; the other is murder in the Midwest. Also featured is Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, another, abrasive Green Lantern introduced in last year’s “Superman.” HBO Max.
August 20: “Blood Sacrifice” is a five-episode Swedish crime thriller about a Stockholm detective forced to work with his estranged father, an ex-cop, to track down a serial killer who’s murdering police officers. Jakob Oftebro and Peter Andersson star. Netflix.
August 21: “Rivals of Amziah King” stars Matthew McConaughey as a beekeeper in rural Oklahoma whose business and life is upended by thieves who target his hives and honey. A bluegrass musician and born-again Christian, he draws on his former foster-care ward (Angel LookingGlass) to help find the culprits. Kurt Russell and Rob Morgan are featured. Theaters.
August 28: “Dog Stars” is a post-apocalyptic science-fiction film from director Ridley Scott, who’s said it’s a hopeful tale. Based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller about the world after a pandemic that killed most of humanity, it stars Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”) as an immune survivor who’s a pilot living in an abandoned airfield. Co-starring are Josh Brolin as an armed survivalist, Allison Janney, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong. Theaters.
August 28: “Coyote vs. Acme” is a live-action/animation mix based on Ian Frazier’s 1990 New Yorker article speculating Wile E. Coyote suing the Acme Corporation for all the gadgets that failed in the hunt for the Road Runner. The legal comedy stars Will Forte as Kevin Avery, a cheap billboard lawyer representing Coyote, and John Cena as Buddy Crane, a slick corporate counsel Acme hired. Theaters.
