West Peoria News for September 2010

The West Peoria Neighborhood Watch will meet on Wednesday, September 8th at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall. Guests for the evening will be members of the SWAT Team from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Middlemas will give an up-date on any criminal activity in the community.

The West Peoria Neighborhood Watch celebrates their 10th annual “Night Out Against Crime” on Saturday, September 11th from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Franciscan Park. Fun is planned for everyone in the family. Special events include a Bicycle Rodeo. Kids, bring your bikes. The Travelers Protective Assoc. of America will conduct the rodeo which is a bicycle safety program. West Peoria Township will be registering bikes and having a Bicycle Drawing. Children must be accompanied by a parent to be eligible for the drawing. A canine demonstration, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department’s BearCat armored vehicle, and WPFD Equipment display and Boy Scout Troop #11 will be featured. Gate prizes, sno-cones, hotdogs, and entertainment by the Living Room Band and the Flynn’s Irish Dancers will be enjoyed. West Peorians join your Neighborhood Watch for the 10th “Night Out Against Crime”.

Early voting for the November 2, 2010 Election will be held at West Peoria City Hall, 2506 W. Rohmann Ave., West Peoria, IL during the following times:  Friday October 15, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Monday October 18, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Friday October 22, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

The last day to register to vote will be October 5, 2010. If you have any questions please contact Carole Stephens at West Peoria City Hall at 674-1993. April, 2011 is an election year in the City of West Peoria for many of our local officials. The offices are: Mayor, City Clerk, Treasurer, Four aldermen – one seat each in Wards – 1, 2, 3, 4. Anyone interested in running for any of  these positions should contact the City Clerk. Nominating packets will be available to be picked up at West Peoria City Hall September 21  thru  December 20, 2010. The West Peoria Residents’ Assoc. will meet on Thursday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall.

Do you know that permits from the City are needed for certain projects on your property? All residential permits are $25.00 and are needed for building of sheds, decks, porches, additions, fences (new or replacing existing ones), new driveways and sidewalks (even those made of gravel), swimming pools and signs. Building a new multi-family home the fee is $150.00 and for a single family home the fee is $75.00. A permit is also required for a home occupation. The initial fee is $75.00 with a yearly renewal fee of $25.00.

Commercial building permits are $120.00.

It is the residents’ responsibility to keep their section of the alley free of trash, the grass mowed and weeds trimmed at all times. Please check your section of the alleyway for branches, weeds, trash etc. Keep your grass and weeds trimmed.You will receive a violation if these are higher than nine inches tall. Weather this summer has yards looking really ragged. They may require some extra effort for a while.

Please make sure to clean up after your animals. Animal waste and bird seed droppings attract rats and other rodents.

West Peoria’s TIF District Developments: at the August 10th City Council meeting, Foster’s Auto Service, Inc. at 3523 W. Farmington Road was annexed into West Peoria. The plan to expand the boundaries of TIF District 1 is underway. The plan is to add approximately 40 properties to the district. The City is also planning to add a second TIF District. The second district will connect to TIF 1 and include the newly annexed properties.

Open burning of landscape waste or trash is no longer allowed in West Peoria. Guidelines for recreational fires can be gotten from City Hall. A fire shall be immediately extinguished anytime wind conditions become strong or if the wind begins to carry brands or embers creating a potential for fire extension. It is the responsibility of the property owner/tenant to ensure the safety of those enjoying the fire and therefore must extinguish the fire when the winds are too high. Recreational fires identified as hazardous due to excessive smoke or odor emissions are prohibited. The City may order the extinguishment of any recreational fire that creates or adds to a hazardous situation.

The Code Officer’s hours are: Monday-Tuesday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday-Friday: 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.  All information is confidential. You do not need to give your name when you report a violation.

There are still funds available for the Residential Paint Reimbursement program. This program offers reimbursement of paint costs to residents who wish to paint the exterior of their homes or accessory structures. (sheds, storage units, or garages). Reimbursement will be granted for exterior paint only. Residents can pick up a copy of the guidelines and an application at West Peoria City Hall, 2506 W. Rohmann Av.
