West Peoria News for July 2012

July 4th is almost here. It is the one time a year where the population in our community probably doubles or more with all the visitors who will come for the 43rd annual 4th of July Parade and Flag Raising. Have your properties looking their absolute best and let our visitors know that the living is “Best to the West of Peoria.” The parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. on Rohmann near the school and travels to Sterling to Moss to Waverly to Rohmann back toSterling and then to the flag raising ceremony at the Franciscan Recreation Center’s flag pole. Invite your families and friends to participate in this annual event.

It is time to start thinking about the 2nd Calvin Coolidge Mothers Club Reunion that is planned for August 27th, 5:30 p.m. at Sky Harbor. There was a great turn out the first time. If you know of anyone who missed last year and would like to attend please let that person know to call Mary Hamm 697-4118, Guydeen Roos 258-1258, Alice Nash 674-4308, Diane Craps 633-0669 with questions or reservations. R.S.V.P. by August 15th  with name, phone number and number attending. Hope to see everyone again this year.

A big thank you to the scouts of Pack 11, Troop 11 and West Peoria Township Board for the nice Memorial Day program at Franciscan Park. Approximately 50 people attended to pay their respect to our military.

At the July West Peoria Neighborhood Watch meeting, Lt. Joe Hartwig, from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, will speak and demonstrate self-defense. This is a very informative and educational presentation – don’t miss it. Deputy Joe Vissering will give an update on any criminal activity in the area and answer questions about specific concerns. The Neighborhood Watch meeting will be on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. The public is always welcome.

The West Peoria Residents’ Association will meet on Thursday, July 19, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Public is invited.

The West Peoria Residents’ Association and the Franciscan Recreation Center will co-host Concerts in the Park for a second season! Mark your calendars for:

Sunday, July 15 – SideTracked will entertain with a smooth mix of soul, pop and jazz.  This group is a sextet featuring two female vocalists, keyboards, brass, guitar, and drums. CONCERTS START AT 4 P.M. to 6 P.M.

Sunday, August 12 – The Peoria POPS will fill the afternoon breeze with melodies as on the POPS can do! Bring blankets, lawn chairs, picnic baskets and neighbors and join the WPRA for Concerts in the Park!  CONCERTS START AT 4:00 –  6:00 p.m.

The West Peoria Beautiful Awards will again be sponsored by the West Peoria Beautification Committee and are presented for the improvement of an individual residential West Peoria property. Residents are encouraged to start checking around their neighborhoods for nominees. Nomination forms can be picked up at City Hall and must be submitted to City Hall by August 31st. Awards will be presented at the September 20th West Peoria Residents Association meeting. Questions may be directed to Maggie Moore, 673-0535.

The Heading Avenue Franciscans have planned their Annual Mass for West Peoria on Sunday, August 5th at 10:30 a.m.  Coffee and doughnuts will follow the Mass celebration. This is the 100th year that the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception will have been a continuing part of West Peoria.  Congratulations to the Order and thanks for all you have done for the community.

All residents are required to sign up for garbage service with Waste Management – 1-800-796-9696. You will be charged for this service. Landscape Waste Pick Up is included in the price. Landscape Waste Pick up is picked up every Friday at the curb until the last Friday in December. Garage Sales are permitted once each quarter for no more than three days.

Building Permits are needed for several projects: porches, decks, sheds, garages, new driveways or sidewalks and new homes. Most residential permits can be obtained by filling out the application at City Hall. Any questions, please call Code Officer Bill O’Neill at 674-1993 or 370-1142.

No Open Burning of trash or landscape waste is permitted. To report a violation of this policy, please call: Peoria County Sheriff at; 672-6011. Inoperable Vehicles – All vehicles without an up-to-date license sticker are considered inoperable and are in violation of City Code. Any vehicle without said sticker must be stored in a garage. A vehicle parked on the grass is in violation of City Code.
