November happenings

Nov. 1 – Peoria Garden Club Monthly Meeting will be held at the Peoria Library – North. Ideas, themes, & table settings will be presented to inspire for the holidays ahead. Refreshments served at noon. The general meeting is at 12:30 p.m. & the presentation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Public welcome.

Nov 3 – Casablanca – An Evening of Dancing with the Stars @ the Par-a-Dice Hotel Ballroom at 6:00 p.m. Call CASA at 309-669-2939. A great opportunity to make a difference in the life of an abused or neglected child.

Nov 4 – 15th Annual Sports Auction & Card Show 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the RiverPlex. Proceeds benefit youth sports in Peoria. Sports card collectors will be set up to buy, sell, or trade cards & collectibles. The silent auction items will be open for bids.  There will be a live auction at 2:00 p.m. A raffle will be held. Raffle tickets are $10 at the Glen Oak Park Pavilion or at the auction – only 220 raffle tickets will be sold. Winners will be drawn at the end of the auction, & do not need to be present to win. Nov 4 – 85th ANNUAL LEBANESE SUPPER – noon – 7:00 p.m. at the Itoo Club, 4909 W. Farmington Rd., Peoria, IL. The menu consists of Lebanese Cabbage Rolls, Chicken and Rice, Kebba, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Fried Chicken, Salad and Pita Bread. The cost per Adult serving is $15.00 and children under twelve are $8.00. Beverages, desserts and Lebanese delicacies are available for purchase. Nov 8 – Monthly General Meeting of the Peoria County Genealogical Society – The November speaker is Mark Johnson, owner and director of the Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. since 1987. He will discuss the history and anatomy of obituaries, and how obituaries have changed over the years. Mark has fun and interesting details about the final tribute we have given our loved ones over the years. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Peoria Public Library’s North Library – 3001 W. Grand Parkway. Meetings are always open to the public.

Nov 8 – 10 – Bradley University Theatre Presents “The Philadelphia Story” at 8:00 p.m. This romantic comedy originally Starred Katharine Hepburn with Cary Grant and James Stewart. Ticket prices are $14 for adults; $12 for BU faculty, staff and senior citizens; $7 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the Hartmann Center Box Office or by calling 309-677-2650.

Nov 9 – Peoria Players’ Trivia Night at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 3601 N. North Street. Teams of up to 8 people are welcome; there can be less than 8 people on a team, but no more than 8.  Singles or couples are welcome to sign up; we will place them on an available team or create a team with a group of them.  The cost is $15 per person and it must be paid in full for your team to be registered.  Prizes will be awarded!  Space is limited — call 688-4473. Proceeds will benefit our Sound System Upgrade campaign.

Nov 9 – Sarah Hawbecker will be presenting “A Program of American Composers” on the completely restored 1919 Hinners organ at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 3000 W. Richwoods Blvd., Peoria. A prize winner of numerous competitions, she has performed and presented workshops for conventions of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. She will be performing 7:00 p.m. An offering will be received and a reception will follow the recital.

Nov 9 – 11 – 66th JULEP’S Closet Sale, Peoria’s largest sale of quality new and used merchandise. This fundraiser has provided a community service and financial foundation for the Junior League of Peoria since 1946. The proceeds from the sale go towards funding the League’s projects.

Nov 10 – Peoria Poetry Club meets at Riverview Senior Living Community, 500 Centennial Dr., East Peoria. Guests, of all ages are welcome to bring a sack lunch at 11:30 a.m., read a poem at our noon meeting, and enjoy an interesting program at 1:00p.m. For more info call 545-2365, or visit peoriapoetryclub.com.

Nov 15 – The public is invited to a free Caregiver Education Night from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. at Senior World, 719 N. William Kumpf Blvd. Suite 300, Peoria. Delores Sheen R.N. of OSF Saint Francis Medical College of Nursing will present on “Laughter and Blues.” Please R.S.V.P. to 495-4530 by November 13th.  This program is co-sponsored by IPMR and SIU School of Medicine – Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.  Refreshments provided.

Nov 16 – Dec 21 – Candlelight Walks at Luthy Botanical Garden from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Visit the Poinsettia Show at night under the warm glow of hundreds of candles. Admission waived during holidays. Call 309-686-3362.

Nov 18 – 42nd ANNUAL TURKEY TROT, the oldest race in the Peoria area, will be at 1:00 p.m. at Detweiller Park. All entrants of the four-mile run will receive a T-shirt. The top two finishers in each division win a trophy and a certificate for a free turkey, compliments of Kroger. Visit website at www.peoriaparks.org/running for a printable registration form. Nov 22 – Jan 1st – 28th  Annual East Peoria Festival of Lights Holiday Light Show

Recurring daily. Call 309-676-0303. Admission: Cars 7 family vans $10 nightly – cash only. The almost 2-mile drive-through electric park is the Festival of Lights’ signature event! Folepi’s Winter Wonderland features the majority of the Parade of Lights floats and many other lighted displays. And for 2012, the popular downhill skiers will be enhanced!

Nov 23 – 125th Annual Santa Claus Parade – 10:15 a.m. in Downtown Peoria. Sponsored by PACE. Call 309-681-0696.

Nov 23 – Yule Like Peoria – from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Downtown Peoria. Commercial buildings in downtown Peoria host various forms of entertainment. Refreshments, ice carving contest, costumed characters and decorated street lights. The Courthouse Tree Lighting ceremony is at 6:00 p.m. Call 309-681-0694.
