Gordon-Booth Urges Residents to Beware of Scam Artists During Flood Clean-Up Efforts

As residents clean up from historic flooding, state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria) warns residents against scam artists who might try to take advantage of those looking for assistance.

“Over forty counties, including Peoria County, have been declared disaster areas by Governor Quinn,” said Gordon-Booth. “As residents are cleaning up from flooded basements and yards, it is important that they remain vigilant about who they are receiving assistance from. All too often people cleaning up from disasters get taken advantage of by those looking to make a quick dollar.”

Although assessments of the damage are not yet complete, the state is looking at the eligibility for a possible federal disaster declaration. In order for a federal disaster declaration, the state and federal governments must jointly assess the damage to the state declared areas. If the areas are declared a federal disaster area by the president, monetary assistance may be available for individual persons.

Once the flood waters begin to recede, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) will begin assisting municipalities and counties with debris removal and clean up. If a federal disaster area is declared for any or all of the counties, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will set up an office in the area that will be the contact for those seeking assistance for damages.

To report damage caused by the flooding, call the county emergency management agency. Peoria County Emergency Assistance can be reached at (309) 691-3111.
