Happenings for June 2013

June 1 – Heartland Festival Orchestra Concert V – Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Curtain at 7:30 p.m. Five Points Washington, 360 N. Wilmor Rd., Washington. Call (309) 444-8222. Admission: $30 adults, $8 student/child (ID required).

June 1 – Annual Heart of Illinois Bird Show along with the Bird Fair – at Grand Hotel, 4400 N. Brandywine, Peoria at 9:00 a.m. $3 per person.

June 1 – Sept 28 – Peoria Riverfront Market – Saturdays at Liberty Park on Peoria’s RiverFront. Call 309-671-5555. Market features local produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, flowers, & local hand-crafted arts including jewelry, pottery, wood-turned items, & much more!

June 1 – Historic Trolley Tours – Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Kelleher’s Irish Pub, 619 SW Water St. Call (309) 674-1921. Admission: $11 for tickets plus $1 or Trolley Driver. June 1 – 2 – World War II D-Day – at Sommer Park. WWII Re-enactors will bring history to life with over 30 tanks, half-tracks, trucks, and heavy weapons as well as World War II War Birds in action! You will see the types of camps the Allies and Germans used during the war. Battles will be reenacted throughout this event.

June 3 – Annual Braves Club Classic Golf Tournament at Mt. Hawley Country Club, 7724 N. Knoxville Ave. Call (309) 677-2667. The tournament starts in the morning and afternoon in shotgun start fashion. Reservations required. www.bradleybraves.com or call: 309-677-2667.

June 6 – Whisper & Shout at Contemporary Art Center from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. Peoria’s open mic for sharing and inspiring poetry is held on the first Thursday each month. It features a popular regionally known poet. For more info, visit www.peoriacac.org.

June 6, 7, & 8 – Annual Tremont Turkey Festival. Times vary. Call (309) 253-3263. The Tremont Turkey Festival is a three day festival full of craft shows, petting zoos, car shows and turkey!

June 6 – 9 – Peoria Players Theatre’s “Bus Stop,” 4300 N.University. This enchangting comedic drama portrays the full spectrum of romantic relationships.

June 6 – July 11 – Conklin’s Barn II Dinner Theatre: “Life Could be a Dream!” Weekly on Thursday. Doors open at 6:00PM, Buffet 6:30-7:30PM, Show at 8:00PM. Conklin’s Barn II Dinner Theatre, Timberline Rd., Goodfield. Call (309) 965-2545. Admission: $33 ($35 for musical)

June 8 – 9 – Sommerfest at Hickory Grove Park – Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Sat. and from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Sun. Features German Car Cruis’n and Arts and Crafts Village.

June 9 – Summer kicks off for the Filipino-American Society of Central Illinois (FASCI) with its picnic at the Grieves Shelter in Veterans Park, East Peoria. Festivities start at Noon. The Summer Picnic will be a potluck, featuring delicious staples. Attendees are asked to bring an entrée or dessert, enough to share (enough for 10). FREE – just bring a dish to share.

June 13 – 15 – Annual Steamboat Festival takes place every June in downtown Peoria at the Riverfront Festival Park. It combines a carnival, food fair, music & entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere. Go to: http://www.peoriaevents.com/events/steamboat-festival.html.

June 13 – A continuation of Peoria Genealogical Society’s educational series “How Do I Do That?” Learn how to find where your ancestors owned land by searching and finding their Federal Land Patent’s. 6:30 p.m. at the Peoria Public Library – North Branch, 3001 W. Grand Parkway.

June 14 – Easter Seals – to host a free Developmental Screening from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Easter Seals, 507 E Armstrong Ave., Peoria. This free service is for early identification of developmental delays and is provided for children birth to age five. Screenings are available by appointment only. June 14 – Spirit of Peoria Moonlight Cruise – Spirit of Peoria, 100 NE Water Street. Enjoy Peoria’s evening skyline by the light of the moon on board Peoria’s authentic paddle wheeler. Live entertainment is included with your ticket for this 2-hour cruise.

June 15 – Steamboat Classic – at 7:00 a.m. Downtown Peoria. The 40th running of the Steamboat Classic 4 mile, 15 kilometer and 4 kilometer races will take place downtown Peoria. These running events are open & cater to runners/walkers of all ability levels. Go to: http://www.steamboatclassic.org.

June 16 – 39th Annual Steamboat Classic Race – 7:00 a.m. at Hamilton near Adams St. Admission TBA. Regarded as the “World’s Fastest Four Miles,” “Illinois Toughest 15K” & “Peoria’s Easiest 4K,” these running events are open & cater to runners/walkers of all ability levels

June 16 – Father’s Day Sunday Brunch at Wildlife Prairie Park – 3826 N. Taylor Rd., Hannah City. Time to be announced.

June 18 – The Universalist Unitarian Church sponsors Ronny Cox in Concert. He’s active in films (remember Deliverance?) and TV, but playing music is his first love. 7:00 p.m. at the church (3000 W. Richwoods Blvd.. Tickets: $20 each and are available at the door. A reception at the church will follow the performance. For more info, phone 309-688-5608.

June 21 – 22 – 7th Annual Universal Rhythm Assembly at Peoria’s downtown RiverFront. An “Earth matters” festival that is committed to “Going Green” and bringing in eclectic music from around the globe. Go to: www.universalrhythmassembly.com for more info!

June 21 – Village of Peoria Heights: Duryea Days.

June 21 – 23 – Old English Faire – at Wildlife Prairie State Park. The fundraiser for Wildlife Prairie State Park pays tribute to the sights, sounds, aromas, speech and activities of the Middle Ages. Cheer on sword fighters, jousters and archers as they compete in mock battles.

June 22 – Peoria County Genealogical Society Celebrates 40th Birthday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Courtyard Estates of Peoria, 117 N. Western Ave. Call 697-4518. Admission is free. Learn about the Society and what it offers. Exchange stories, research tips, and questions about finding your ancestors. Wear attire that might tell about an individual on your family tree. Refreshments & free parking.

June 29 – 30 – 3rd Annual Multi Sport Extravaganza. The event begins at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and continues through Sunday at 2:00 pm. The event will be held at Wildlife Prairie Park, 3826 N Taylor Rd. Call (309) 241-0966. Pre-register through June 14th at a cost of $18.00 a person/w a cap of $48.00 per family. After June 14th the cost per person is $20.00/w a cap of $55.00 per family. This is a weekend devoted to having fun and experiencing new, different activities.

June 29 – 30 – Rhapsody in Bloom @ Luthy Botanical Garden. Sat. hours: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sun.: noon-5:00 p.m. Works of local artists; listen to the beat of talented musicians & performers; &taste culinary creations from some of Peoria’s best eateries – all in a fragrant garden setting!
